Freeloading at Fremont by Bill Spencer tREMONT, CAL., July 11 Professional racing in the Pacific Northwest took many of the regular J 0 series riders away for this Wednesday night's nJnning, but while the big cats were away the Ii ttle mice did play and win. Manuel Datan won both the 125 and 360 Expert Mains to move into the top five slot for overall high point and Chuck Kole's win in the 250 Expert put him up into the top ten. And with the pro scene moving South for the next week, the pros migh t just stay away until they aren't in the hunt at all. Datan has been showing the most improvement of late riding two Yamahas, both superbly set up, and consisten t1y placing in the top three positions. He appears to have the necessary horsepower and with time, he migh t just be able to give Rick Hocking a run. The mini-biker set continues to grow, and while Randy Mamola is still the kid to beat, some new faces appear to be ready to take over when Randy turns to Sporsman racing, such as Neal Hockenbury and Steve Lucero. Much rejoicing centered around the 360 Junior Main trophy presentation as winner Scott Pearson was informed that it was his his last Junior win and to get out the E;xpert plates. The rejoicing came from second and third place finishers, AI Wood and Buddy Robinson who can dig it. Scott had dominat.ed the win position for the entire series and is tied for third in points on the overall. His points travel to the Expert class, and if he can hang it in their with the big boys, he will be in the hunt for a new set of leathers. Pioneer shaping up by Bill Spencer OAKDALE, CAL., July 14 - Amateur short track racing is on the up{wing in District 36, and one of dte reasons is the Pioneer Arena track. The track surface has made the most of the improvemen t with the addition of a concotion of soil that makes for one of the neatest cushion tracks in existence. Jerry Griffith, the owner and a former professional racer, has put in many long hours with J.R. Trammell and other memebers of the Oakdale M.C., and the result is nothing short of fantastic. Ted Davidson won the 250 Expert run, while older brother Butch suffered mechanical ills after just returning from the Pro circui t in Washington. Finishing second, in his best performance in some time, was Larry Dunnigan fighting off Duane Bowling, who has just returned to racing after a knew operation. Dunnigan, a kissin' cousin to Ken Roberts. and who from Modesto isn't, has been suffering with bike problems, but kept it together for the second tonigh t. AU that, and Roberts is also keeping it toge ther for his effort. Danny Mills had it aU one way in the 250 Junior, with an easy wire to wire win over John Radzack and Curt Brooks, both members of the Salinas confederation. Mills' father, Merle, was the guy who took Roberts to his rITst participan t race and got Kenny racing. Just like I say, they're all kissin' cousins. In the 250 Novice, the race for first was so hot and heavy that the first two guys took the checkered twice, causing a minor scoring commotion. Geoff Lowe and Bob Kerma, two more Salinas troops, were very close at the checkered and were so intent on racing that they kept going. At the trophy presentation the two, Lowe and Kerman, decided that the finish wasn't right. Jibe checkers showed Lowe ahead, but they both agreed that Kerma was the winner and so that was fine. Craig Scroggins won the 125 Expert Main for his first win in some weeks. The 14 year old youngster was about to hang it up due to financial problems, but with the help of Ben Zakarian setting up his 125 Bultaco, Craig is still at it. A molded cap/thread set-up that is indescribably fantastic. for oyerflow moon scrambles by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., July 13 - Anybody who follows the signs of the stars, Zodiac and other superstitions would dermitely not race on a Friday the 13th and doubly so when there is a full moon, but 230 hardy souls braved those disparaging signs and rode the fast Fremont TT track. Ron Kole took the place of older brother Jerry in the win circle, while Jerry was playing pro racer, and won both the 250 and 500 Expert Mains. Jerry was last year's S.crambles champ here and Ron could well take his pll\ce with performances like tonigh t's. Both wins were fairly easy, with the battle for second being the hot spot. In the 250 AI Mendoza beat out Randy Gibbs after a race long duel, while in the 500 a spectacular crash in the pack gave the win to Kole with John Proto beating out Dave Butts for the second spot. Phil Vitale displayed his new number but same old winning ways in the 350 Junior, riding Glen Halls beat 'up old 350 Honda. Phillip really makes it sing for second place Pat Myer, its a song of blues. On~y three riders came out for the 200 Junior event but it was one of the hottest contested races of the night, A mounting brKket thet fits any cycle insmntlv. Dual "max-flow" outlets.
