CASTLE ROCK, WASH., July 14 Tradition? History? Yes, But it's still an
enigma, a paradox, an incongruity; this
National in this spot just deem't s.eem
to fit the rest of the National picture.
Castle Rock, Washington is
something like Shangrila in Siberia, a
beautiful spot on Mother Earth, and just
a whole bunch of nice people, stuck out
in the middle of nowhere. A town of
normally 1500 people sweDs to
somewhere in the neighborhood of
15,000. For the most part, everyone
connected with the even t does a
marvelous job; the townspeople, the
local law, and the Mt. S1. Helens
Motorcycle Club.
With temperatures in the mid 90's,
keeping the track watered was a task
impossible to fulfill. But for all the heat
and sunshine, to hell with track
conditions. The bird watching was
superb: never have so many worn so
little!
Qualifying got underway and when it
was all done, there was a pretty good
mix amongst Tiders and machinery.
Triumph, Yamaha, and Harley-Davidson
were all there in the top ten qualifiers.
Chuck Joyner was fastest. Current
points Ieade.., Kenny. Roberts waved off
his first attempt. His Yamaha sounded
like it was shooting ducks. every time he
gass.ed it. He and teammate D';n Castro
were the last two to attempt to qualify.
Kenny's re-tuned mount came on strong
Rex Beauchamp took fourth in his heat, but found himself in neutral after the flag. He was unhurt. Cop at left seems unconcerned.
