There are expected to be about 300 more motorcyclists and 20 more countries signed up before the first International Six Days Trial in American gets under way at Dalton, Massachusetts on September 17. '" ... Norton and Triumph finished their merger on July 16. It was a beautiful wedding. ...J U l M ,.... ~ N > '5 ..... rJ) ~ z • • • * * w >- U * ow there are plastic wheels for cars. They're lighter than mags, 20 times as impacl resistant, ten times as strong in bending, and superior in tension and compression. And they come in colors. Maybe we'll see them for hikes. Yvon year. • • • DuHamel * made $122,000 last * * Yutaka Oda, the friendly Japanese road race champion who competed at Daytona on a Team Dirty Yamaha, was killed at a road race in Japan. Maybe road racing is getting too dangerous. Maybe it's been a bad year. • • • Look for Harley·Davidson to produce a 175cc two stroke single that will be "much like the Yamaha CT·l". Maybe it's like a new set of leathers. Thea he goes to challenge the factories at the National. * * * A n other note on freeway riding. Experienced lane splitters say that you've got to watch out for the people who see you coming. As they look over at you, they unconciously turn slightly in the direction that they look. Look out for the lookers. They even do it to cars. Bob Gill jumped 22 cars at Seattle International Raa!WIy in Seattle Washington. The distance was 171 feet. Gill daims a record. Yam ah a seems to be the likeliest - candidate, but then there are mmors that they've been having problems. We also wonder who will be first to produce a clean bike - or an electric one. There's also BMW who are mmored to have a {our cylinder machine in the works. • * If there isn't a big four-stroke single being developed at Kawasaki, why has someone asked Red Une to· make a frame for one? * * * In last week's Freeway.Riding article we :f You Can't Go To Laguna Seca, At Least Listen! It is legal to split lanes (that is, ride between the lanes of traffic). However, the road lizards will bust you for riding on either shoulder or for splitting lanes at over 30 MPH. Although the law says that it is legal to split lanes (for which you can thank Russ Sanford, motorcycling's California lobbist), the police will nail you for reckless driving if they feel that you are going 100 fast. But that still doem't explain wliy it's safe for them to split lanes at 75 MPH. * * * For this fall's Trans-AMA series you can expect to see the Montesa factory fielding a team. Kahley; Vehkonen will be riding a 370 Montesa (look for a test in C N in about a month). There is .Iso a possibility that Raymon Boven will ride the series. Boven is the new 125 and 250 Montesa star.
