THE GRUELING lWENTY·FOUR HOURS OF MONTJUICH
HURRY SUNDOWN!
by John Huetter
BARCELONA, SPAIN, July 7·8 - The
Spanish riden Salvador CaneUas and
Benjamin Gnu rode the factory Ducati
860 prototype to a new course record
and surprisingly easy win in this 19th
running of the 24 Houn of Montjuich.
Second was the 360 Bultaco single
piloted by Spainards Enrique de Juan
and Jaime A1guersari riding for the
Bultaco factory. Even with a 500cc
displacemen t and one cylinder
difference, the factory prototype Bul
had closed to within reasonable striking
distance of the factory prototype
Ducati when de Juan crashed in the
dosing two hours of this 24 hour
Ducati, with en 860 proto end heeds-up racers, _
~ road-racing classic.
The consequen t rearrangemen t of the
Bultaco's working components and de
juan's broken collarbone, coupled with 23
hours of hard riding, allowed the
beautifully-prepared Honda 750 of
Frenchman Georges Goudier and Swiss
Alain Genoud to close to within two laps
at the finish after running consistently
in the top four for most of the grueling
distance.
Pre-race favorite, the John Player
Norton of Peter Williams and Dave
Croxford, was out of the race for-good
before dawn of the second day with a
split oil tank that defied any attempts at
welding. They were clearly tIte fastest
combination at Montjuich this year but
the idea is to road-race fast for the fuJI
the win_.
24 hours. The other John Player Norton
of Rex Butcher and Geoff Barry !
