THE GRUELING lWENTY·FOUR HOURS OF MONTJUICH HURRY SUNDOWN! by John Huetter BARCELONA, SPAIN, July 7·8 - The Spanish riden Salvador CaneUas and Benjamin Gnu rode the factory Ducati 860 prototype to a new course record and surprisingly easy win in this 19th running of the 24 Houn of Montjuich. Second was the 360 Bultaco single piloted by Spainards Enrique de Juan and Jaime A1guersari riding for the Bultaco factory. Even with a 500cc displacemen t and one cylinder difference, the factory prototype Bul had closed to within reasonable striking distance of the factory prototype Ducati when de Juan crashed in the dosing two hours of this 24 hour Ducati, with en 860 proto end heeds-up racers, _ ~ road-racing classic. The consequen t rearrangemen t of the Bultaco's working components and de juan's broken collarbone, coupled with 23 hours of hard riding, allowed the beautifully-prepared Honda 750 of Frenchman Georges Goudier and Swiss Alain Genoud to close to within two laps at the finish after running consistently in the top four for most of the grueling distance. Pre-race favorite, the John Player Norton of Peter Williams and Dave Croxford, was out of the race for-good before dawn of the second day with a split oil tank that defied any attempts at welding. They were clearly tIte fastest combination at Montjuich this year but the idea is to road-race fast for the fuJI the win_. 24 hours. The other John Player Norton of Rex Butcher and Geoff Barry !
