At a recent URA enduro we got a chance [0 go for a short jaunt on a new XL 175 Honda. Noone could have been more surprised. We had been told by numerous people that it was somewhat a toad. It'stood to reason that it would be underpowered and over-heavy. While these things are to some extent true the end product is quite nicc:. The XL 175 is shorter and ligh ter than the XL 250 and carries correspondIDgly fewer horsepower. It's the XL 250 for smaller people (women and children). The chassis is not XL 250, but is mostly umque. Suspension units are well matched to the chassis. Handling wise it makes an excellent trail bike. Il is stable and forgiving and more tame in whoop-de-doos than its larger relative. There is a significant enough The finest weight reduction from the 250 that it feels great to 250 riders, and with tile appropriate amoun t of parts stripping is at a reasonable weigh t for a 175. True, the power is not that of any lWo-stroke 175. But, like the 250, it has a large amount of slugging power. The biggest motor problem is throttle response. Like the 250, a different pipe would help a bunch. Like the 250, the 175's most redeemjng characteristic is how easy it is to ride. Less shifting and less hassle, combined with a bike which you don't have to fight to handle, make for a great trail bike. For the beginning dirt rider it would make a really good choice. Or, for the small but experienced rider, like this bike's o\-vner J Benny Renfro, the bike will go a long ways. AII·Purpose Punip On The Market T otIay ROGUE INDUSTRIES INC 10556 Arnwood Rd.
