Smith tops PetalUDla ScralDbles by James Brammer PETALUMA, CAL., July 6 - District 36 scrambles point leader, Mark Smith on a 250 Champion framed Yamaha, carried his winning streak through the monthly scrambles at Petaluma ran by the Sonoma Marin Sport Cycle Association club. After sandbagging in his heal race in a distant second place finish behind Wade Boyd, Mark Smith was off and runnjng all the way in first in the IO-lap 250 Expert main. Randy Gibbs, an early second place runner, fell in the chase. The following order at the finish was Wade. Boyd, Allen Yarrow, and Duane Spence. In the Open Expert class, won by Triumph mounted Duane Spence, Kelly Mcisaac (Yam) jumped out fronl on the opening lap followed by Allen Yarrow, Mike Rkhardson, and Duane Spence. Heated competition soon was rough for first place ,with Yarrow getting the lead and then a flywheel on Mcisaac's moun 1 came loose taklng him out of the race. Spence moved up to take the lead from Yarrow. Once out fronl, the three-sixties were no match for the big Triumph with Duane Spence aboard. Yarrow finished second on' a Yamaha with Fenn Pervier on a Bultaco getting third. John Carte.r wangled the Open Novice lead from Ron Sparling to win. Brian Koga (Suz) ran away wjth the 250 Junlor lead to win his final. _ In the 250 Novice final, winner Mike Bogdanovich (Bul) battled closely to the finlsh with Brad Kotsaries to hold his lead. Fred Merttens fmished second in the ) 75 NoVice to Rusty Davis after loosing time and some times positions as he had trouble shjfitng gears as he advanced from behind. Cheryl Veltal repe.ated her win of the previous month in the girls class, but she fell off while in third -in the 100cc Novice class against the men. This time though Huffman was hOl on hjs lair, but the screaming Suzuki of Amaral was just lOO much this time as Amaral pulled away for the win. Huffman look second and Rick Lewis (Suz) look third. Another exci ting race was in the Old Timers class. Regular winner Dick McCormick on his 125 Suzuki was aced out by a new face. He was Jack Lewis on a Bullaco Pursang, and he probably would have given the Open class a run for the money. Lewis wan ts to start an Old Timers Club and he is looking for members over 35. Duane Doran (Bul) and Len Macch,iarella (Mon) fought a close conlest in both 250 Senior motos, bUl Len crashed and had to settle for third place behind Mike Middleton (CZ).
