places, as his seat flew off coming over a jump on the backside of the course. Pomeroy passed J ones for third, bu t shortly thereafter got blocked in as he was lapping traffic and could not break away to challenge the leading duo. It was about this time that the fun and games began as Jaroslav Falta, who was being lapped, dropped in behind Baborovsky to run interference against the approaching Karsmakers. The next time around Falta and Karsmakers were tangling in every tum, and Pierre later stated that Falta had even swung at him after forcing him (Pierre) off a berm. While Falta and Pierre played roUer derby motocross, Baborovsky wicked it up and pulled a few lengths ahead of the -5econd place excitement. The crowd may have been enjoying the clash, but Pierre Karsmakers was getting fed up with it and showed his displeasure by block passing Falta in a tight tum at the end of a sweeper. Falta wasn't done yet and repeatedly tried to pull even with Karsmakers. But, Pierre resisted every attempt at passing and gave Falta some of his own medicine by stuffing him into fence and taking out after Baborovsky at a rapid rate. But time ran out, the flag fell, and the fight was on. JIM USED MOLY* MARTY USED MOLY* '~ '" ~ Z W ....J U >- U ----II i~. r,A= SECOND 250 MOTO With the memory of the first moto still in their minds, the spectators got set for a repeat perfonnance. Tbose who had expected great things from the Kawasaki team of Weinert and Lackey were disappoin ted but hopeful of a better showing in the second match. But, Lackey was still plagued with mechanical problems. After cracking a piston in the first moto, he switched engines only to be sidelined wi th- a seizure in the second moto. As for Jim Weinert...it was just an SOS Sunday. When the gate fell, it was Marty Tripes that blitzed into the lead and Antonin Baborovsky that brought up the rear. Tripes ~d the majority of the race, with only Heikki Mikkola being able to get around Tripes for a brief time in the later stages of the moto. Tripes passed Mikkola so handily though, a few laps before the finish, that one wonders if maybe Tripes didn't let Mikkola by just to see how fast he could go. Tripes also displayed some Yurpin' tricks' for the crowd. As Tripes and Mik kola swung in to a soft berm, Mikkola started bumping Marty in an attempt to force him over the top, whereupon Marty pulled in the clutch, let the engine hit about a zillion R's, dropped the clutch and covered Mikko,la up with a wall of spraying dirt. And that was that, Tripes took the moto win, Mikkola had to be content with second, and Pierre Karsmaken stroked it in for third, secure in the knowledge th at he had first overall wrapped up. Where was everyone else? Far behind. Bob Harris, Doug Grant and John Dallaire all tried to get within striking distance, but the best they could muster was a near tie for second place going into the third moto. Harris and Dallaire were tied at six points each, and Gran t was only one poin t away. The gate dropped and Hartwig ran off and hid, while Harris bested Grant and DalHare for second and waited for /igh lOing to strike. Most improved perfonnance of the day by a privateer was that of Texan Steve Hackney of the Houston based H&H Music Team, as he came from a poor first moto showing to seven th in the second moto and fourth in the final go round. Hackney's total . score placed him sixth behind the Bultaco of Ron Pomeroy. And that was it friends and neighbors. It were neat and just like they say it should be in books. Part of the reason that the races were so enjoyable must be attributed to the host club, the Wheelsport's Motorcycle Club. The track was in excellent condition, deluxe Porta-Cans were everywhere, numerous short in termissions kept the lines at the snack stands to a minimum, and for once flagmen looked like they knew what they were doing. Kudos to Wheelsport, and Baldwin Motocross Park. It is some fine track. RESULTS 250cc: 1. Pierre Karsmaker (Vam). 2 Antonio Baborovsky (CZ). 3. Helkkl M"ikkola (HUi). 4. Jim Pomeroy (Bul). 5.
