R'oad Racing by the Riv~r Bob Endicott leads e...ntual 250 win';"r Wes Cooley ..Bob did what he always does with Yarnah~s: broke. by Art Friedman Photos by Shawn Culp, Lany Lim & Friedman RIVERSIDE, CAL., July 7 - Lots of riders and lots of dirt greeted the ACA today at Riverside. In addition to plenty of dirt on the track there was some other slippery stuff, mostly sports car droppings from the previous week. Things went pretty safely, however, with only Buzz Buzzelli coming to any serious grief in the form of a broken collarbone and ankle. Don Emde seemed to be the fast guy today. He made off with an easy 350·0pen Senior GP win on his Yamaha 350. He was given a little bit of pursuit from siniilarily mounted Mike Devlin, but it wasn't significant. IT ace John· Hateley missed the start of the event but worked his way through the pack on his factory Triumph 750 to beat all the slower Open and 500 class bikes. John Gallagher was 500 class trophy-taker on his California Kawasaki. Earller on, Wes Cooley was 250 Senior GP winner on his U.S. Racers Yamaha. Bob Endicott held second for a bit, but since he was riding a Yamaha, it broke. Bob always breaks Yamahas. He's finished a race on one once, but eve.n then it broke. Tom Carroll picked up the second spot. Other Senior winners included Terry Stanart (of course) on his DeAnza Cycles lOOcc Kawasaki, John Weed on his Weakly Yamaha 125, and John Serra on a 200 Bul. Ralph LeCercq provided a mild surprise by holding off the two-strokes to win the 175 class on his Ducati. The 125 Junjor GP class was composed entirely ofYamahas and won by Mike Baeder on one. A Yamaha in the hands of Bob Crossman, wh,) demoted himself to J unjor sratl.s especially for the event, won the 350 Junior event. Bob sa;d it was his fir,t ride on a new bike and he wan ted to get the hang of it. Apparently he was successful. The first real Junior on a 350 was Richard Williamson. The 250's ran with them and Bruce Longson won that class aftN leading the whole ball of tar for several laps. After some initial mixjng-up Chris Lopatosky (Hon) won the Open class from the other Juniors. Second was Lee Open and 350 senior winner. Don Ernde IMds Mike Devlin. Allen Kiehl gets und... the paint on his way to second in the 125 production event. Joh'} Hateley ,came o~ tor a li.t~e ~ice and dK::l some winning in the process.
