Scrambling at Vallejo by James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., June 30 - After four laps of wheel-to-wheel action in the Open Expert final, Allen Yarrow wangled the lead from Kelly McIsaac. Capping the eight lap thriller, Dave and Mike Faria came on in the last comer to get second and third with McIsaac placing fourth. The Faria broth'ers also ran a dramatic race in the 100-200 Junior-Expert fmal with Dave on a 100 Yamaha in second and the YQunger Mike on a 125 Yamaha winning on the last lap. Brothers Duane and Allen Yarrow were unable to capture the 250 Expert class from winner Kent Johnson on a Honda. With Kent leading Duane contested him all the way with the two far out front. Pace setter Johnson slowed in the closing laps from fatigue or to reserve power for that critical last straightaway, but Duane made no fmal attempt to pass. John and Ed Neuenburg, another skilled pair, each won a first. Ed took the 250 Novice class on a Bultaco. John Neuenburg, on a 500 BSA MX, won the Open Junior class. Dick Parsons from the Richmond Rambles ran second on a Yamaha and th..,n another 500 BSA MX riddep by John Thompson captured third. Does the man who answers the phone at Vallejo Speedway have problems? Most sanction schedules have motorcycle racing scheduled at Vallejo on Friday nights. The current Cycle News Calendar says Monday night. Actually motorcycle races are held weekly at the Vallejo Speedway on Saturday nights only. Marysville MX by Kay Edward MARYSViLLE, CAL., June i7 - The riders problems began before the rubber band let go for the first race: Charlie Marshall (Number 1 District 36 rider) injured his foot in practice and was unable to ride. "Gabby" was unable to get fire out of his Hodaka. This alone was not strange, but the six futile hours he spen t wrenching was true dedication. The next problem arose when Danny Turner seized his BuI on the starting line of the 125 Expert class. That proves it: .Nothing will take 18 races under Danny Turner! The 125 Junior class was a walk-away for the fast moving Phil Bryson (Suz). D. Davis (Suz) took second place, with the wonder kid, Mike Marshall, overcoming some bad starts and moving to a third place fmish. Kim Reeg (Bul) ran away with the first moto of the 250 Junior class, followed by D.Joice (Yam). The second moto saw Alan Ratzburg (Han), after overcoming a bad first mota finish of seventh place, get the hole shot and pull away for a second moto win. Kim Reeg (first moto winner), was put in a bad position when he bogged his bike off the line. However, the taste of overall victory was tempting and he rode like a man being chased by the devil for a second place finish in the mota and an ,pverall win for the class_. The first mota of the 250 Expert class saw Danny Turner (Bul) take the lead, not yet realizing that the curse of the Loch Ness Monster was still on his tail. Just as he began settling into the groove his second problem of the day arose, it seems as though, his chain had better places to go, giving the win to Jim Turner (Man). Moto two saw Danny Turner again take the lead and stretch it like a rubber band. But, this was not enough for the overall win that went to Jim Turner on his Montesa. In the Open Junior race Jack Melugin took control and showed the other riders what it was all abou t. Sponsored by Slim's Yamaha of Marysville, Jack recently moved from the 125 to the Open class without skipping a beat. Jack and his brother Curt (250 Expert) are on the move to leave their mark in the motocross world. Can y-ou believe a 45 second lead? J. Loff riding a Maico put in the most astounding ride of the day - for fust in the Open Expert class. Second honor went to R. Schilling (Mai) followed by M. Hart, riding Charlie Marshall's blue plate Maieo. Hart put in a good day by a1sa taking home the second place brass in the 125 Expert class. Charlie Brown took the lead in the third heat, but missed a gear and Dick McGrew took over first. Bob Davis had meaked up on Brown and edged by him to take second. It looked like Brown had the Junior Semi wan when he developed ignition problems and was out of the race. John Hartman moved into first and held it all the way to win. It was Brad Tibbetts all the way in. the Junior Main as he took the lead and put distance between himself and second place Cooper. Mark Baker was third followed closely by Hartman. Tibbetts took home the honors and trophy in the Junior Trophy Dash as well. Duane Hendrickson dominated the Novice class tonight as he won his heat race, the Trophy Dash and the Novice Main Event. Randy Scism, Graham's Novice Point Leader and also the Number one Novice in Washington, tangled with Darrell Hendrickson in the first Novice heat and went down, breaking his leg.
