Dec. 10, 1972 Taking the very big win in the 250 Expert Main was Jim Turner on the Charley Brown CZ in front of the chaUenging Moto·Villa ridden by Alex JOIgensen. The early part of the day had been a show of force by Bill Grossi, but a rear wheel problem on the second lap of the Main put him out of action. Grossi had pretty much dQminated both the 250 and 500 classes in practice and the heat, but riding the same bike is questionable by AMA standards and so he rode for exhibition only. After Grossi fell by the wayside, Bill Scarlett took over on his 250 Maico, a rather new steed for him and afLer only leading' for one lap in a trade with Jorgensen, he blew a seal and had to retire. Jorgensen again inherited the lead hut with eight laps in the Main, Turner ate him up rather easily. Turner then proceeded to extend his lead while Jorgy had no troubles holding an even second. His prototype Moto-Villa again performed quite well and as he becomes more used to it, he goes faster and faster. Just to show that it wasn't all that easy for his second, third and fourth went to MXers Chris WiJlems and Chris Carter. Both are great racers in their own righ t and have participated in the Support class this fall and both are old hands here while J orgy never raced here before todat'. Certainly the most exciting battle of the day shaped up between Bill Seirn and Mike Kenyon in the 250 Expert run. Seim rode a very well prepared 350 H-D. That's it. a 1l0nky·Donky on the sand, against the 350 Bultaco of Sonny Kenyon. Mike led off both the heat and the Main but succumbed to the more talented Seim. Coming down the hill on the last lap in the Main for the flag saw Seim drop one hand in distress and just after the flag, Kenyon nearly knocked Seim off as the exhaustion took its course. Seim did a tremendous job with the four stroke while Ken yon needs some more tinie on the bike. Fred Bennell made it two for two in the 125 and 500 Expert runs. Bennett is an old hand here but has to watch the likes of Ron Alsop and Matt Carothers in the little class. The Open show was between Fred and Steve Corcoran and D'ale Mathers. Mathers made it a little easier for those two as he bailed on the last tum. The 650 Expert run was small, five, but still as exciting as it has been in the past. Winner was Larry Lane, that mild mannered small appliance repairman, that goes around dressed as Elmer Gantry, with Bill Fleutaking second for the Los Gatos M.C.
