R.A.C.E. Saturday MX by Marilyn Hart Photos by Earl Topham CORONA, CAL., Dec. 2. 1972 - This day was defmitely a Zahrt Day At The Races. Those watching Ken's dad unload both the DKW and Bultaco from their van all agreed, "Well, that takes care of the 125 and 250 Experts for today" and Ken was not one to disappoint them as he took the payroll home again in both classes. Not quite as noticeable, however, were two additional winners from that same family. Little brother Jon Zahrt took third place in the Minis behind the Hondas of Ron Utaski and Andy Northrup; and David Zahrt (Bul) was in for the second place win between Brian Olson (Pen) and Dave Scott (Yam) in the 125 Juniors. With an unusually light crowd for Saturday racing, all 125's were run together and David Zahrt found himself not only in the middle spot for the win in his class, but also in between the likes of Big Brother Ken and Jeff Vidic who began lapping the entire field in their battle for first 125 Expert. Young David was scared to death and didn't know where to head to get out of their way, so he followed Dad's advice - stay where you are and they'll get around any Junior, otherwise you might pick the wrong line and cause an approaching, rider to crash. The main rule is: GET OUTIA TJiE WAY IF YOU'RE BE1NG LAPPE.D, but if you're a Junior with ALL NEW! ALL WE~THER! Broadway, Glendale, Ca. 91204 Experts on your tail, it seems only logical to STAY PUT and let them find their own way around you. As guessed, the hottest battle of the day was in the 125 E.xpert Division. The first moto saw Zahrt with the hole shot and undisputed win over Vidic and Ken Buirley (the Hotshoe from Oregon.who swept the class the night before). Ken shot out in front again on the second mota, only to drop it hard on the backside of the big hill, losing lots of precious time but, nevertheless, coming from WAY BACK to literally nip Jeff's wheels and, at the finish - it was Vidic by half-a-wheel! The third moto was wild with Vidic and Zahrt so far out it was unbelievable; that is, until they tried to lap three riders and Ken wen t around where Jeff didn't. Chuck tFeets) Minert brought his BSA up to show the big boys how to ride the Corona Raceway. Despite a hard over-the·bars header in the second moto, Chuck hauled that smooth-soundin' four-stroke in for a Grand Slam win in the 500 Expert class, leaving Terry Power in second on another BSA. Despite several spills and slide-outs, the ambulance didn't have to move all day again, so why not come on out and try your luck at the track either Friday nights or Saturday mornings for a lot of fun. With all the trophies being given away, not to mention all that hard cool cash for the Experts. See you there. ell & ~ N .... ell ~ o ~ w Z W ...J U >U
