Motocross Menagerie p Old Timers MX at Arroyo u o " ~ w Z W ..J U >- U by Bud Eads DEVORE, CAL., Dec. la, 1972 _ The Old Timers Motocross Association was scheduled. to lock horns at Arroyo today. As I drove down the two mile rocky road to the entrance, a ligbt snow began to fall. When I reached the gate bouse a hand reached out into the sub.freezing weather and asked for $2.50. When the icy wind blew through my opened wmdow I suddenly thought "I should have stood in bed" but then my curiosity got the best of 'me. How many of these "Centlemen of the Two Wheels" were senlie enough to freeze their frijoles out here today? Crumbling, I drove into the pit ar.ea whIch looked like a ghost town. Where was everyone? I sbuffled over to wbere. the races were posted and to my surpnse twenty Old Timers were signed up. Then I discovered everyone in their cars and trucks, heaters running full blast. Then I did the same to regroup and load my camera.' After the third moto it had warmed up a bit and there was a little more movement in the pits. Many wore skiers Heidelberg face masks and were pretty grotesque looking. But, come to think of it they weren't quite as l(rotesque as tbe grizzled Old Timers with. their natural faces and bears. In the Novice class, where all the action is, fiery joaquin Morillo was off like gangbusters in the first moto, taking a first. But then be unloaded in the second one and left to soak his knee in a hot tub and buy a new helmet. W.E. Bjrd (Yam; 3·1.1), john Stew.art (BuI; 2·2-3) and Larry Escanlllla (CZ; 4-3-2) took home the gold ill that order. In the Amateur class, Don Withers (Hus; 1.1.1), H. Scodoris (CZ; 2-2·2) and Will Lynch (Mai; 3-5-3) were very conSIstent. Fourth place Manny"Dauber took a .third to spoil Will's perfect strmg. (Manny ndes a 175cc Yamaha and probably makes more out of his eq wpment than anyone. He also discovered he could thaw out hiS frozen fmgers under the hot water between motos.) The Expert class was a breeze for Joe Rose (CZ; 1-1-1) and Dana Wilson (CZ; 2·6-2). Ed Poore (Bul; 6·5-4) must be completely recovered from Hopetown, finishing strongly to take third overall. Good show gentlemen! Hope you saved some for the Chnstrnas party Saturday. CMC MX at Carlsbad--by Buzz Baty/Creative Images CARLSBAD, CAL., Dec. 10, 1972 Boil and bubble - too much water makes terrible ~rouble. Ah, yes, twas the story at today s CMC showdown under terrible skies. When the motos were finished, the numbers couldn't be read. In no way could they be read. But the CMC crew, who knows many of the followers by name Or sigh t, came though with the results alrigh t - so it seems. A Snodgrass named Brent took first on a Hodaka Super Rat in the 100 juniors. Right away, the CMC's Peters & Franks (sounds like a clothing store) started changing the course going every which way in hopes to find some dry turf which would not destroy the plates. With hair dripping with California dew their attempts ~ere met with "It's no: _ nice to fool rno ther nature!" Splish, splash they were taking a bath - the 125 Experts, all taking to a new course. Tbe one taking. to the new course with bestest and 1:he fastest was Marty Smith on a Monark. The 250 Expert portion of the program (dripping with action) wen t to CZ's Doug Sherman, while the 500 slide con test was won by Dave Helleck also Chey-Zed mounted. " Your intrepid pbotog, with all his cameras so expensive and nice ...stayed out of the rain so as not to melt or get hIS equIpment all covered with ice (poetic injustice?). Now, stay away from me next Sunday at Saddleback. I'm liahle to have. the flu or something and may just gIve It to you free. Brrrr. Old Timers sun bathe between motos. David Cheney, whose bike had fallen prey to the Vegas run, was on a borrowed 100 Yamaha but was handicapped to the 175 cla~s because of his newly attained Expert status. Cheney wasted no time jumping in for a fIrst and was pushing the little 100 all the way. Jimmy Jacks pulled away for a good second. One sentence could easily tell the story of the 250's. They ended in a three way time and had to be decided on the order of finish in the last race. Each had a first, a second and a third and 925 points. The order of finish in the last moto was M.
