TT 0-37 at 395 Cycle P a r k - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Ed Drechsler ADELANTO, CAL., Dec. 10, 1972 The first sidehack ever to finish the 150 miles of the Ba~stow-to-Vegas Hare and Hound won today's sidehack event at the District 37 scrambles hosted by the TIM.C. D on Davis and Fred Acevedo outrode the faster and superior hack of John and Brian Monohan. The Honda-4 powered Wasp of the Brothers MonOhan lost fire while leading the first moto. By the time ·they were restarted, no hope was left. Moto two was interesting as the two hacks passed and repassed each other. The hack of Davis/ Acevedo came out on top. Moto three was about the same with _ '" .g> ". the Wasp winning that one. Bob and Charlie Sanner finished third. Th.e weather was down to 31 degrees, but it was a dry cold. The track was in good shape with a ligh t layer of loose stuff over the hard racing surface. It was too cold to water, so we rode the dry track. A couple of guys had to build a fire under their machine to warm it up enough to start it. Mike Myers put it together and out rode a large pack of 250 Experts. Mike won his seat with ease and was looking forward to the Main event. The second heat came' up and a young rider from Arizona jumped to the lead. Gary Wells simply ran away from the pack for a very easy win. At this point it was very 0.. 'j! ~ ",' ...; Cl rJl ;;: W Z W ..J U >- U Tom White had some fun. difficult to get odds on the Main. Wells got a bad start and Myers grabbed the lead. Wells fought his way through the pack, but in the end he was no match for Myers today. Dennis Briggs on a tricked out Boyd & Stellings.framed Kawasaki came in for a third. Kirk Redding remains the man to beat in the 500 Expert class. Riding a Maico with a HFor Sale" sign on it, Kirk rapidly left the pack and ran away with the win. Scott Smith and Pat Lynch fought it out for second place. Tom White came out to ride the District run and have some fun at the same time. His finely tuned Triumph roared to life on the first kick in the below-freezing temperatures. The first and second motos saw Tom literally run away from the- likes of John Sprague and the Elsinore Terror, Vic Hannon. Richard Marquis and the rest of the pack fought vainly to keep Tom in sight. The start of the third moto and Tom is on the fence watching. His rear wheel had locked up and he was unable Letting it hang ...out. Perris TT--------------------------------------- by Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., Nov. 18, 1972 - The race of the night was between Doug Mason and Rob Morrison in the 250' Expert go: These two put on some kind of show from beginning to end, and no one could even speculate who was going to be on top until the checkered fell. Rob would get off on top each time and it wasn't Doug who was in the lead when they came around as is usually the custom. In fact it took Doug every bit of the three laps to get by Rob and it happened on the downhill sweep.er. As has been said before, Doug has hIS own line and it's a pretty hard one for anyone else to follow. Rob did the best job of anyone and Doug didn't have to look around' to see where the rest of the field was. He knew! The only one who mattered was up his exhaust pipe. Doug did take the first overall with Rob second. Doug also picked up the first in the Amateur·Expert moto and this time he was pitted against Rick Milner. Rick was really rubber legged and seemed to have KIR MOTORCYCHS KAWASAKI MOTO-GUZZI NORTON AJS MOTO-X COTTON TRIALS PENTON 265 CAJON BLVD., EL CAJON, CALIF. Doug may destroy the statistic that the 250cc machine is the fastest on the track as he continues to take seconds off with his Maico. Bob Graves continues to grow as a rider and his performance in winning the 250 Amateur class speaks louder than anything. Bob just doesn't restrict himself to one track and the education he's getting is showing more and more. Bob should make the Expert ranks this season and they had better look ou t. Second place Kenny Miller is another one who's getting it together again. Ken took a pretty good spill at Corona and it spooked him as it does most riders. Well, it looks like it's all behind him. Brian Garcia or "Super Mex" to his Trojan fans moved closer to his transfer as he won di.e 250 Novice n. Brian hasn't been riding that long and doesn't have any background in any type of riding. He literally jumped in with both feet and has really taken off. Rich Barnes topped Danny Garcia ... " and Brent Knaver in winninl( the 45U Novice, Division I. But Bren t fared much better in the first division of 125 Novices. Fred Hollister ana Chuck Markley were second and third but really never presented any kind of problem to Brent who is worth watching. Bill Dell won Division II. Willie Hardin has a fast Suzuki as Gary White and Steve Colford found out in the 175-200' class. Again Gary didn't measure up to the performances he's capable of turning in. . Dave Rees looked in full control as he won the 100-125 Amateur-Expert class. Vern Maxwell, the new transfer continues to beat the more seasoned riders. This fellow has shown so much potential in such a shott time that he could be one of-those that goes righ t to the top, the very top. John Erickson was given the word he is now a Perris Amateur as he picked up his trophy for winning the 100 Novice I. Kip Johnston on a quick little Yamaha 90 took Division II. to start. Sprague and Hannon led the pack around the track' and finished overall in that order. White ended with· a third overall. Dennis Briggs was testing another tricked out machine for his dad, and ended up winning the class. This time it was the 100 Amateur/Expert class. When first on the track, it was geared wrong and appeared to be down on power. After some work by Windy Briggs, the situation changed. Dennis ended up .as winner, followed by Mike Laney on a Hodaka. (Imagine, a six foot, one hu,ndred·forty pound Hodaka rider again t the little guys.) Wayne Whisenan t finished third. Long way from District 37 meets, Steve Okuda came back to show the 125 Amateurs that he still had it as he managed to trounce them all. Lloyd Quintard took the honors away from Brian King and Dennis Briggs in the 125 Expert division. Tlie poin t run for next week - last of the season - is scheduled at Adelanto. by the TT M.C. I t will be smooth, weather permi tting. Gary Wells will not jump for "Toys For Tots" as not enough time was allowed for publicity. All classes will sign at 7:30 A.M. and race at 9:00. Bring your longies. KENYON ST. LOUIS, MO., Dec. 10, 1972 - AI Kenyon (Bul) led every lap of the Main event after starting from the pole position to ).Yin the St. Louis Championship race. Kenyon was pushed throughout the Main by Junior rider Steve Dalgamo (Bul). Dalgamo, in tum, was pressured by Mike Gerald (Oss). John Gennai, after surviving disqualification by AMA officials for coming to the starting line of the Main on a bike which held an engine with a different number than the one he signed in, was in the fight for only a few Japs but dropped out and was listed in tenth place. Mike Kidd (Bul) and Pat McCaul (Oss) took the fourth and fifth spot, behind Kenyon, Dalgarno and Gerald
