l!!l AMC Carlsbad MX :g, :. ('oj ~ ~ ~ o If) 3: ~ w 13 >- Co) by Scott Heidbrink CARLSBAD, CAL., Dec. 2, 1972 There was a moderate crowd, and the action was still there in bundles. Being the next to the last race in the Smuggler Series, most of the riders still in contention came out to race today, and add points to their total so far. The track was in fair condition, and due to the small entry, there were three twenty minute motos. You could see the fatigue in the riders as the last moto approached, but it is good for a change for the riders to get a workout like that, makes you feel good inside. Bill Glore (Hod) took a devastating win over the Pen to of Mike Lasker and Corki Moore's Honda. The ever-present battle between Don Carlson and Randy Schloe came out in Dan's favor today, with Randy having considerable trouble in the first moto, but coming back in the second and third rounds, to salvage second place. Chris Provost rounded out the top three on his Rickman. Jeff Martin and his quick Chey-Zed won the Beginners part of the 125 's today. Greg Lersch won again in 'the 125 Novice class, putting on a good demonstration of skill, beating out the Dalesman of Don (no I'm not satisfied to race just one division) Carlson, who managed a second and first for his two divisions. The 125 Juniors provided its usual battle, but with different winners, but the same one in the $OP three ( au ..;...,_':""""_ _~-----_:_-------------know, just sort of mixed up a touch). today, it won't be too long before he Today, it was Bob Williams turn to win ge ts a free ride up a class. on his little Suzuki. Night MX_. _ by Marilyn Hart Photos by Earl Topham CO"RONA, CAL., Dec. 1, 1972 - A nice crowd was on hand under clear 'crisp skies as Rex Staten returned to Corona Raceway. Rex, who's been having more than his share of mechanical problems with his CZs on the TransAMA circuit, had no such trouble tonight as he swept both the 250 and 500 Expert classe.s with a six·for-six victory. The tigh test race all nigh twas between DKW mounted Ken Buirley from Oregon and Mark Tyer on his Penton in the 125 Expert class. Ken took all three wins but Mark really made him work for. it. Not only was Tyer right on his tail all three motos, but one finish was so close the fans were hollering, "Who Won?" It depended upon where you were watching, but the finish line showed Buirley ahead. With football season over, brothers Mike and Mark Rawley were back in the results again. Mike and his Penton took the middle win in the 125 Intermediate class behind Ken Mathis (who was SD quick on his Bul he was pestering the Experts) and ahead of Albert Cancino who finished third overall on his Husky. Mark Rawley on his CZ finished third overall in the 500 Juniors behind Yamaha mounted Dean Harrison from Washington and Mark Digioia on another CZ. The out-of-towners all but dominated the entire result sheet as Charles Currie brought his Bul from Placen tia to take the first place trophy in the 125 Juniors, followe.d by Paul Dube (Suz) from Apple Yalley, and Rusty Bostelman (Bul) from Garden Grove. The 250 Intermediates were just as scattered as Jerry Lowell (CZ) from Glendale took the win. Once again, the 250 Juniors had to be divided and Eddie Coulter (Cl) was first overall winner in Division I with Roger Ketelsleger and his CZ taking the Division II win. Dan Jones and his Honda enjoyed a Grand Slam win in the Mini class over the Yamahas of Ray Currie (big brother Charles took first 125 Junior) and Dan Hrynkiewicz Oohn was third 250 Expert) . I CRC Arroyo MX _ by "The Shadow" DEVORE, CAL., Dec. 2, 1972 - The program today at Arroyo attracted the "Racing Roses", with all three placing high up the ladder in their respective classes. First of all, David Rose (DKW). placed second in the 125 Beginners, under 16 class, behind Rickie Yilla. Then came Dennis Rose, also moun ted on a DKW. Dennis placed first in the 125 Novice class. Finally, Joe Rose (Cl), raced his way to a first place in the Yeterans Open race. Ron Perry piloted his Yamaha to a great showing in the Yeterans 0-125 class. Good old Ron had a long string of run-of-the-mill finishes until today. In this race, John Collins (Yam), swept th~ first two motos to take a first place, but it was the final moto which had everyhody talking. There Perry .finally had everything go his way, as he nipped Collins at the checkered flag to win the last mota. You'd have though t he won the Barstow-to-Yegas race. Of course there was aIso Chuck Berry in the Yeterans 250 class. Chuck, tired of less-than-spectacular showings zipped down to his friendly Yamah a dealer and ordered up a brand new 250. Today he flew . through three straigh t motos, taking a first place in each, and a first· place overall. Danny Fleming (Suz) swept to victory in the Minibikes, Division One, while Tim Moto (Yam). was a winner in Division Two. Randy Frederiksen (CZ) captured the Expert race; with Michael Jackson (Yam), a winner in the exciting Hillclimb Drag Race, which followed the regular motocross racing program. There was a second Collins on the scene Saturday. R<>d Collins (Yam), placed second in the 125 Beginners race behind Leroy Larson (DKW). Last, but not least, Bret Catcott (Yam). grabbed a first in the 100 Beginners, under 16 race, with a first in ,the 250 Novice race going to Brad Catcott (CZ). Let's see, that made three Roses, two Catcotts and two Collins, and 'everyone either first or second place finishers. • ' • • • • .J _• • , •• I ._ u ~ .,j " J J ",; '.' '.J.I "' ..
