-- - -. WHILE FISHBACK 'NAILS-IX DOWN ~ o III ~ W Z W ...J U >U Cordis Brooks faces the desert. Jim Fishback (CZ) passed Pfutzenreuter shortly after the start of the second loop and came in second overall and first 250 Expert, cinching the number one place in that class. Sometime motocrosser Fishback has just started riding desert this year and has gone from number 1488X to 1X in less than 10 months. Oddly enough, the story is almost a parallel to that of Larry Pfutzen~uter, who last year came from motocross to desert and won. Dean Modesett is too young to have a driver's license, but he drove that 125 DKW in for fourth overall and first 125 Amateur. Dean was also second 125 and first Amateur. Amazing ride for a young but determined kid on a littly bitty bike. Guess he figues, "If Brooks can do it. .. ". Todd Cornish rides an old Husky that is just about worn out. He has been ON Fing a lot lately as things break faster than he can find and repair them. Befo~ the race Todd said, "All I want to do today is finish," but in the heat of the race he forgot all about that and rode to win, finishing fifth overall and first 5 00 Expert. Mike Patrick rode his 250 Yamaha in at sixth overall today quipping "1 just can't make up my mind." Mike is number 10 on the 360 Yam and Number 41X on the 250. About the time Neil Christman piloted his 175 Puch in for seventh overall and second Division II Lightweight Amateur, spectators began to get the idea that the course was really small bike coun try. Nell pu t in a good ride, being pressed from behind by Wes Anderson, Jr. (CZ) who always spends his leave from the army racing desert. 1 heard somebody tell Wes that he had retained liiS/3X plate and could take it to Korea with him next month and hang it in the barracks. Jim Sumners (Hus) and Floyd Burke, Jr. (Kaw) diced it out for fifth 250 Expert, with Jim coming in first by a knobby. Larry Roeseler (CZ) was first 250 Amateur today. Larry usually rides number four Trailbike, but switched to the 250 today and, as is standard practice when you move to a larger displacement machine, was bumped back to Amateur until the steward has a chance to see how he handles the larger bike. Larry said the whoopers were "this high," holding his hand at shoulder level, and that the~ was "Too many sand washes." Other than that he ~a1ly like the course, although he, along with about 100 other people, wasn't too happy with Desert Knights' lousy weather.. (It was snowing at check two). "Wow, I really did it," shouted Chuck Cartledge (Hod) when he was informed that he was first Trailbike, "And I'm still an Amateur!" Chuck finished ahead of first Trail Expert Gary Charters (Hod) and all the ~st of the Trailbikes. Frankie Keepers has ~a1ly been having a lot of trouble with his bike lately and promised to do dasterdly things to it if he DNF'd again today. He was p~tty happy to fmish, and mo~ happy to find that he was third Trail Amateur, his last transfer ride. Rob Peterson (Yam) led the Novices all the way around the course twice and into the fmish line. Rob was first Novice and first 250 Novice. Steve Ball (Yaj) tried to give him a race, but his throttle cable broke and Steve had his hands full (literally) hanging on to the cable and second place at the same time. Chris Bengtsson was first Division II Novice on one of those little 125 Monarks w!tich we are beginning to see more frequen tly. Perhaps that is because Chris shows up at the finish line so regularly on his. Grand Prix finishes (where everybody comes into the finish area ono: the first rider has finished) really complicate the results. Ron McCamish (Suz) appeared to be third 250 Novice and since he has been righ t up there lately, that is probably correct. Ron was followed in by first 500 Novice Bob Mosteu (Hus) and second 500 Novice Joe Wesselman who was riding a very quiet street·legal Yamaha, complete with licenoe plate. Bob Kiker was righ t up the~ again today, first Trail Novice (both loops today) on his little 100 Honda. Sandy Termin just got a new 125 Penton and used today's race to get used to it. Inciden tally, she was first girl, also. Desert Knights, aside from freezing their fannies during the race, gave out neat little gifties. Congratulations to all you hardy souls who rode the whole thing today; or even rode as far as the bomb. Are you warm yet?
