o ·KNIGHTMARE: BROOKS GETS CLOSE N " 5 ...l' N .... 01 g o ~ w Z W ...J tJ > U by Alice Rhea RED MOUNTAIN,CAL., Dec. 10, 1972 - There is still some hope that young Tom Brooks may win ·the Division II Lightweight class, and Tom is reaching for that number lC plate with both hands. An Amateur led the charge to the bomb today, but he was so farin front that nobody believed it. It was later confirmed that the Amateur had started quite away in front of the legal starting line, but it didn't matter as he DNF'd or plain wasn't good enough to keep u~ the pace. On a day when you would think all the riders would huddle together for warmth, Tom Brooks climbed on his little 125 DKW, cranked it over and flew for the checkers. Coming into the pits, Tom had about thirty seconds on second place Larry Pfutzenreuter (Bul) who is also engaged in a last minute struggle for a number one plate. Larry sough t to retain his I X and needed to win this last two races of the season to accomplish that. ButJim Fishback (CZ) is after Larry's position and was hot on his· heels. Rich Mark (Hus) and Todd Cornish (Hus) zap-zapped through the pits as first and second 500 Experts. Both of these young men have recently transferred to the Expert class, and although neither is in a' position to take the Heavyweight' crown this season, both are promising talent and rode today like 'they were after number one. Most surprising of today's rides was the one turned in by Dean Modesett. Still an Amateur, Dean rode his hqrt out to bring his 125 DKW through the pits in sixth overall and first Amateur position. Meanwhile, back at the bomb, a very disappointed Tom Smith put up and parked his Yamaha. It had seized one time too many, and he packed i't in for the day and has probably lost his chance to be Number One this year. Tom really needed a win today. Jack Knebel (CZ) also in a possible position to take the number one crown, stalled in the sandwash righ t after the bomb, started it up again and rode Fishback confers with Fputz-etc after the former came home first and won the plate in the 250 Expert plate. away, but somehow never made it to the fmish line in time to count. A.C. Bakken (Hus) broke his backing plate and sat down to contemplate the situation. Some Lost Coyote (not the animal; the club member) stopped and exchanged parts with A.C. so he could finish the race. What with repairs and all, A.C. also finished way back, but he did finish, and he is still very stongly in the running for Number One. The tight, twisty course was ideally suited to small bikes, but Tom Brooks really doesn't need a tight course to win. He charged across the finish line first overall with enough time between him and second place to drive a freight train (30 seconds ·or so). Bill Friant (Puc) the only person standing between Tom and his title, was so far back today' that Tom can pretty well count these, as clear points, not having to subtract what Bill earned. Tom was excited enough today that he forgot to tape his hands. When he finished his left hand was bleeding, and he had raised a nasty·looking blis.ter on the right.
