.. Tile First ()f Atony 72.1 Crane-thorpe Buena Park. CA 90621 •••• ~ Klocker's SALES & SERVICE MEANS When you wind the wire either use a safety wire tool or, if you wind by hand, don't wind one strand around the other, wind them together. Now that you know how to safety_wire, what should you safety wire? Things which are generally neat to safety wire are bolts and nuts which aren't frequently removed (safety wiring is time consuming). Then there are some items where the other methods are not decent substitutes. First and foremost is the drain plug_ [-lot oil meltsgoo, lock washers leak, and stripping is a drag (helieve me). Safety wire it. I wouldn't e.ver trust goo or washers on my swingann pivot eiLher. Other things which are fun to safety wire and look nke too, are motor mount bolts, shock mount bolts, brake arm bolts, exhaust nange springs, bolts, or whatever holds the pipe to the head, and whatever strikes you as deserving_ Messy Lots of things which tend to falloff can't be safety wired easily, or are removed or adjusted sq often that wire is prohibitive. One method which is available to you at very little cost or effort is, the famed ugorilla snat." Usually "gorilla snot" is either 3M-Weatherstrip or GE-SiEcone Seal, depending upon who you talk to. 3M. while much messier than Silicone Seal, is superior for holding on nuts and bolts_ Uowever, it won't seal well and suffers from gas and oil. Always try to get it on the threads. If it's a nut, try to get it on the outer threads after tightening the nut. If it's a bolt, put goo on the threads of the bolt and tighten it. The way I apply "gorilla snot" is to smear a bunch on my finger and slap it all over anything that is at hand. This doesn't always bring the fanciest results, but things stay on. Things being; axles, shift lever pinch bolts, counter shaft sprocket nUls, lower clutch adjusters, handlebar bolts, throltle sEde caps, fender bolts, heat shield screws, etc., ad infinitum. Goo is fun and it makes your bike look like you left it under a telephone wire in Capistrano at the wrong time of year. Other alternatives that fall in the realm of goo, are the various substances commonly termed lock-tigh t. Most of these chemicals are some form of Egh t epoxy and are exceedingly reliable. The only hassles come in using them. All pieces in question must he clean (generally requiring a cleaning chemical) and the stuff ends up being pretty expensive. The initial cost is fairly high, but a little goes a long way. Only trouhle is every time I buy some I use it once and either lose it or stcp on it. It gets expensive. Most are not affected by heat, gas, oil, chisels, or atom bombs. I t's great for nuts on crankshaft ends, clutches, like thaL Certain forms are also indispensable in setting caged bearings. It'll work anywhere and convincingly. Heavy (huh?) _ The standard way to keep nuts and bolts on is to use lock washers. Lock washers will work but seldom as well as wire or goo. I still use them in many places, out of guilt ( guess. Don't confuse lock washers with shims or nat washers_ Shims can't be replaced by artificial means and flat washers generally protect paint or aluminum and should be left. ," One of my favorite affixers, b\.ll unfortunately also an expensive one, is the nylon lock nut. The nylon lock nut is a normal nut with a nylon ring which keeps a solid grip on the bolt or studs threads. There are all kinds of other lock nuts but none seem to be as functional or long lasting as the nylon variety. Other nuts which might trick you into thinking that they're lock nuts are castle nuts (which fit with a cotter pin) and cap nuts (which are just what they say). Unfortunate Stripping holds a nut or bolt on once at the most. After that it's "replace it" time. A great way to avoid stripping nuts and boilS (and spark plugs) is to never start them on the threads with any tool that has leverage. You'll ncver strip anything with your fingers. Now you have some ways to keep the functional pieces attached to your scooter. Pick the ones you like best in whatever proportion of technical excellence and expediency you like. In the next art.icle of this series you can' re'ad about tuning your engine for yourself and the occasion. Like the Senior Prom. - Busqvarna PEDrrON 6624 Atlantic, Bell, Ca. Can you tell me where to write La get some infonnation on making my bike compelitive, and whol should contacl about racing next year? Also could you tell me which organizations hold races for Production bikes? GARY SCHIMDTf Alhambra, Calif. You've made a good choice in the 350 Yamaha for production road racing. As it comes it is competitive with a majority of the 3S0 Production bikes road raced. There are some which are so wildly modified that conversion to GP road racer pistons cylinders and heads is necessary to keep up. If you're just beginning road rac~ng that extra horsepower will most likely hinder rather than help your efforts. It makes the power band very narrow and the RS's chassis components aren't up to the added horsepower. In order to get started, get used to your bike (know it .intimately). remove the stands, safety wire the drain plug, have good tires (not excessively worn, and of reasonable quality), tack on three number plates, tape the head and taillights, and write to the ACA, Suite 312, 106 N. After school and on weekends my' friends and myself ride in the orange grove behind my house. My friend Doug brought his bike, a Yamaha 175 enduro, over one day to ride. We made this jump out there so he thought he would try it. Well, he went over the jump and really sailed. We were really amazed because we have to go a lot faster and.have a lot more revs to go as far on my bike (a Yamaha 125 MX). Could you tell us why this is? We sure are bewildered.
