It's almost inconceivable the things that happen to bikes, even to the professionals. for instance, a few weeks ago I watched a European motocrosser lose a shock absorber off his factory prototype. Theres seldom an excuse for a. mechanicaJ failure, and while they will happen, there's lots that can be done to prevent DNFs. This is the first installment in a series of articles on preparing a bike for racing. Keeping the Nuts and Bolts On There are four basic ways of keeping nuts and bolts in place. Fancy: drill a hole in the bolt with 5/64" drill and safety wire to it. Messy: Cover the object in question with one of many varieties of glue or cement. Heavy: Use a lock washer of some variety (Is usually, but not always, heavy.). Unfortunate: STRIPPED - this works bu Lhas some obvious disadvantages. Fancy 1\ n,atly safety wired motorcycle is an exceedingly pleasing sigh t. How you safety wire can make the difference between a bike !bat'looks like a factory prototype and a bike that is wired together. The first thing to do is go to your local hardware store and get about four expensive (good) 5/64 inch drill bits. If you get cheap ones you'll get nowhere (You'll have enough trouble with good olles). Next proceed to your nearest airport to get some safety wire. You can try it with baling wire. but if it doesn't break whHe being installed, it will break under use. 1\ pound of IO-gauge safety wire will cost you about four dollars. Actually it's not nearly as expensive as the drill bits, because it lasts quite awhile, If you couldn't classify your fingers as adroit (You've been doing youI' own wrenching for some time.), you might want to purchase a safety wire applier. These arc neat little devices that make lhc twists in safely wire look great. Next, wei ome to frustration city. Get toge!ber a big bunch of bolts you wanl 10 safety wire (see below) and place them next to a nice vise, How hard !bey will be to drill varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but you'll generally be more successful on Japanese bikes. I f someone has replaced your nuts and bolts with neat tiLanium or other light, hard, replacement items, you might as well put them back on the bike. You can't drill a bole in tbem. No wayl I once tried to drill a self-tapping drain plug. After many vain attempts I took it to my local machine shop and Jet them have at it wi!b their super cadmium, etc., etc., drill. They handed it back two hours later. slightly scratched, but no ho,le. If you've got something like this try alternatives l-..vQ or three. Put the little sucker in the vise with as much extending oue of the jaws as possible_ Drill from 9ne flat to the next one laterally; drilling all the way !brougb is a waste of time and money. Apply some cutting oil now and then, to keep !bings cool and rotating. A variable speed drill will make your tas,," twice as easy. _ Nov; that you have holes in all the nuts and bolts you wanted, it's time to apply the wire. While it may seem rather obvious, there is a righ t and wrong way to safety wire. The wire firstly has to extend to a permanent (does not move) object that is reasonably close and of a size reasonable to tie wire around. Secondly, wire must be wrapped around the nut or bolt in amanner that keeps it from loosening. As below: 2255 HARBOR BLVD.
