. by Ed Drechsler ADELANTO, CAL., Dec. 3, 1972 Originally scheduled for a continuous program, today's rull was modified to coincide with the calendar section of this newspaper. Modified or not, the run came off as smooth as the track. Can trary to early morning predictions that the track was going to reduce itself to a rough scrambles course, a very smooth and fast race was held. The winds that usually start this time of the year were moderate, but had their usual drying effects on the track. Water was not placed on the course for the big bores, and some super-fast sliding resulted. New names, that is names that are always in there but not always in the number one position, jumped into the winner's circle of the ligh tweigh t class. Jim Wright whooped the rest of the 175 Experts and hauled off the gold. Stan L ud wig and Charles Gann completed the Bultaco sweep. Charlie Soderstrom sucked a reed valve in the first moto and was effectively put out of the race. With the way Jim was nying, it would have made a very good race. Doug Mason literally new around tne course to win the 250 Amateur/Expert Main event. Don Frauenberger and Charlie Soderstrom finished second and third in that order. Mike Myers, who usually does his share of dominating this class got a bad start and could only manage a mid-pack finish in tnis super fast field. Tom Doty pushed his Honda to a. third place 125 Amateur/Expert finish. Pretty impressive, considering he was chasing Lloyd QUir\tard and Steve Fortune. g o ~ w Z W ...J t.l >U ,. f' ) I Eventual 250 Novice victor Frank Schnetz leact. Vern Maxwell (477), third placer Orville Van Hee 1189) Bill Klaers, who rides for Holiday Maico, won another Open Novice class. Clearly dominating the pack, this win puts Bill one ride out of a transfer to the Amateur division. There should be some good racing iu store for the 500 Amateur class in a few man ths. Jeff Cesmat (What's he doing on a , big bike?) won the 500 Amateur class. Some how, Brent Sandersoo (Second ride as an Amateur.) managed to take second place ahead of Casey CaJlendar. Hard charging ex-Novice, Richard Denham, grahbed the lead in the first· niota, only to get off easily and get run over. He returned to competition, but without effectiveness. Buck Rich got off and wrenched his knee (good for one free ride in the trackside taxi). The race to watch in the 500 Expert class was for second, third and fourth. Kirk Redding had the wi~ sewed up by a quarter lap. T he boys in the pack furnished us with the action' as Suzuki-mounted Pat Lynch edged out Kirk's Holiday Mako teammate, Tommy Jarnagan, for second. John Sprague continued to dominate the Open class. You know, for a little guy he sure goes fast. John's riding a~d second place scorer John Lowe (2571. companion, Vic Hannon, was edged out of second place by Bobby Sanders. Let's examine Bobby Sanders for a moment. Bob normally rides a little bike, or at least he used to. It seems that Ascot has had a hand in changing that. Last year, he won 27 Main events put on by the HRA at 395 Cycle Park .(He rode 29.) and no telling how many more at other tracks. These were on small bore bikes. He now is riding a 40-iuch Norton. The transition from little to big has re-acquainted Bobby with Mother Earth, but now that he is getting used to the power, it looks like he will be a rider to reckon with_ No matter what you read or hear anywhere else, the next two point runs at 395 Cycle Park in Adelan to will be continuous programs, with all classes signing in at 7: 3 0 A.M. arid racing at 9:00. The Open Expert clash. John Sprague leads Vic Hannon and Bobby Sanders.
