Indian Dunes MX by John GroOlt VALENCIA', CA!- .. Nov. 19, 1972 Kenny Zahrt, who was tackling a 36-rider field in the 250 Pro go, scored double, 20-minu te wins to annex a grand slam victory against the division. The final outcome, however, was a tough one for the young competitor to grab. When the crew engaged in their final-moto duel, the overall triumph could probably have gone to any of four con testan ts. Zahrt had zipped his Bultaco into a short lead as the mid-bore gang slid around the berms and through the tight esses. Ron DeSoto (CZ). Rick Brown (Gre) and Eddie Cole (Yam) were slinging dirt directly behind the front-runner; while Bob Brooks, who was somewhere near 12th, had set sail with more velocity than explosions from a fire in a firecracker factory ... Entering the second lap, Brooks had moved his high-flying Suzuki up among the fron t six: and during the nex t circle of the course, he was challenging DeSoto for second palce, but an unplanned bobble along the back chute was to relegate the Suzuki-riding snorter to third place overall. behind both Sahrt and DeSoto. Bill Payne, who was rolling his Maico for a fifth straigh t overall victory agaillst Open Pro riders at the Dunes, opened a half-acre lead during the first heat race for the group, only to have his throttle _ go nonoperational with but a lap or so remaining.. : It was a swift Jim O'Neal (CZ) who copped the moto from Eddie Cole (Yam). In the second, 20-minute scrap for the division, Payne once again took a commanding lead; fell twice while negotiating the rugged sand flats; and found himself in a constant come-from-behind struggle. O'Neal, with a 1-2 score (700 points). was declared the day's overall winner. Payne, Cole and Darnell were closest runners-up_ During first-round 125 Pro activity, Larry Watkins (Ric). who is going to be a rider worth keeping an eye on in fu ture meetings, roared to a win against racers such as Zahrt (Bul), Jim Hale (Pen). Gary Huber (Mon). and Penton·straddHng Mike Paulsell. In the second go-round, the young riding ace from Newhall stopped Hale, Joe Flores (Hod) and John "The lronman" Rice (Puc) for the largest share of overall wampum. Overall victories among the many divisions of Junior-ran ked riders wen t to: Robert Baldwin (100). Dunes, the Old Timers MX Association had a turnout of about thirty racers all set to do their th ing. A t the end of the second moto the Novice class was up for grabs with Leroy Ballard (CZ) in the first slot. Larry Escamilla (CZ) was in the second slot and running as consistently as usual. The third moto would have been something, but as it turned out, the ambulance had to make a little trip to Newhall, and took so long back the third round of motos was called due to _ darkness. There was no question at all as to the outcome of the Amateur alass. Art McNamee (Suz) trounced all the opposition. However, Will Lynch (Mai) took second with a masterful display of riding. The Expert class was a carbon copy of the Amateur class. John Maroney (Bul) had a firm grip on a first place and J.L. Siebrandt (Gre) had second place under control.
