While rain was forcing the cancellalion of many other events around California. this event started to draw its contingent of riders as early as Thursday. The 17 years of this affair has not waned and the Saturd:ty night parties while very damp, were still prevalent and the only n,ajor missing factor was the J .R. Trammell barbeque. This year it was replaced by the Fremont M.C. orgy that kept the Schaq's resort jumping. The track layout varied from the past few years, only sligh t1y and mainly due to the increased amount of rainfall. It was sloppy in some spots and nearly impassible in otbers. Some of the original trails were rerou ted due to the rains bu t the usual great, challenging course was there for the asking. Thc course started as it usually does, sort of do~nhill to the creek and then very tOpsy-turvy uphills and downhills that circle the camp and comes back in after 17 miles. Do this four times and you've comple ted the even t. I don't have the figures of just how many completed the four laps, but it wasn't a whole lot. The guys that did see the whole thi;"g and went home with all'the brass reads Uke the who's who of motorcycling, at least in this area. The likes of Dick Mann, Jim adorn, Carl Cranke, Don Stover, Ray lIuff and dozens of others make motorcycle racing what it is today. Leading out was Crank with Mann coming up to tailgate him for the first three laps. No matter wbat the condition of the terrain, those two never seemed to be more than five feel apart. Somewhere along the line, Bugs' tire went nat and on the third Jap he had to stop and wire the tire to the rim as the spokes were bent and broken and missing. This was tbe type of thing that made the usual straigh t faced Crankc come in to the last check with. more teeth showing then face. He was a happy soul and his Pen ton and he de se rve d t he rounding cheer of approval. Despite ~Iann's troubles, he still managed a sevenlh in class. Taking third overall and first in the Open t::xpert department wasJim adorn on a 360 Yamaha. adorn is ideal in this stuff and despite his injuries of past year, he is now in great shape and ready 10 get back to racing. Finishing right behind adorn was Bruce Kelley and while he ligured he did prell)' well, first look was eighth, when he found out that adorn won and he came in right behind him, well, it was time lO recheck the brooks. Onc digil ABOVE: Dick Mann and Carl Cranke on lap twO dice on an uphill through some pretty country in the rain. RIGHT: A narrow trail makes for a bottleneck. was writlen down wrong. but the error was caught and Bruce did gel his second. No maller whal the reasons, good or bad. this type of event is thc mosl fun and certainly challenging in every respect. The only problem remains in our ability to kecp land open for use by our clubs. Big brouler wasn't walching over tlte shoulders of the Polka Dots for this one but don't think he isn't around. Lucky for u~, we have Russ Sallford and M 0 R E wlto was there as chief announcer. I just hope there will be an 1.8th annual Wilseyville. This is the way we wash our clothes. The field gets going in the rain. Over 700 spectators, jammed into seating capacity designed to hold 600, watched 35 riders in the 250 class run off six heats and five semi finals to try for the JJ man "A" Main and the money. With the large tum out of riders we ran off a "E" Main to give more riders an opportunity to race. First man out in the time trials was J Oil McCaffery (Suz) setting a new record time of 8.5 seconds which 3/JO 3/l0ths of a second off the old time and on that short track that is quite a bit. Two other riders also timed in faster than the old time. Randy Skiver on a Everett Motors Suzuki and Cris Hansen on a Clarke Simpkins Honda both turned in a 8.6 second time. I. n the J25 class McCaffery finally quit being No.2 and slartcd being No. I and went home with all the marbles. McCaffery won botb the Trophy Dash and the Main event. He finally kept his motorcycle Oil two wheels and was never seriously challengcd on his home built Suzuki. McCaffery is now being sponsored by Modem Motorcycles from Vancouver. Tbe 250 class looked· like tho Roman .. ~..... ... .... ...... .. gladiators in the Forum with. the lions attacking them. From the fmt beat to the last main the action in the comers was enough Lo give our insurance man heart failure as it was no·holds-barred racing. Cds Hansen on a Clark Simpkins Honda jumped into the lead in the Trophy Dash to win easiJy. The 250 "A" Main was 11 of the fastest and toughest riders and they all took turns leading for a while. Both Cris I-Jansen and Randy Skiver led and went down and out of the race with Hansen suffering a badly gashed leg. Randy Scism on a Clarke Simpkins Honda took the lead. Scism managed to hold back George Lenard and Steve Baker, on Yamahas to take the first place after a very close finish. Five girls showed up for the first powder pu ff. These girls have never raced before and lacked experience but that will come with future races as the enthusiasm is very high among them. Bernadette Ilendrik borrowed a 1.00 Yamaha from Pace Motors and went off and won both the Trophy Dash and the Main. Surprisingly her time of 10.4 seconds is faster than some of the more experienced riders.
