Wright CORONA, CAL., Nov. 8, 1972 - the big announcement of the nigh t was the discontinuence of win money to the Experts. Wednesday was the last nigh t money was paid' and Walt Foster made the most of it. Walt has got him a 250cc Yamaha twin that screams. Walt rode this little wacky racer to wins in the 250 Expert Short Track where Bobby Butt andJeff Dorrell tied for second and Ken Miller was third. In the 250 Expert Half-mile it was Walt again, this time with Ray Martin in the second spot and Jeff Dorrell in there for third. It was Bob Sanders who prevented the clean sweep by Walt. Aboard a powerful Norton which, if the word I got is correct, he has only ridden a few times, Bob went to the front and stayed there. Perhaps he's giving us a preview of what to expect at Ascot next year. Tony Dell may not be able to beat Walt and Bobby but he stili comes off the line better than anyone else. Dave Racine squeaked out a close one in the 250cc Amateur 'Half-mile from Dan McWhorter. Both were tied going into the final moto but an out of it rider suddenly came 'alive running away from the whole field, leaving Dave with the second spot and Dan third. Dan was regulated to second overall and Kirk Doy Ie third. In the 100' Amateur/Expert Half·mile there app.eared to be some kind of mix up. Tim McCool aboard Mike Richmond's 125 Yamaha had two firsts and a second giving him the overall win. Vince Mead with a third, fourth and first sc<;>red enough for second and Jim Wood with a second and two thirds finished third. When the results were released, it was Jim Wood with the first overall with no score given to Tim. It was a weird Amateur/Expert Open Short Track. There were four riders in the class and if you score them all together you have a three-way tie for first place. Jeff Zwoster, Robert Fuller d Gary Kaufeld each had a first, second and thitd. The Class however was split giving Jeff Zwoster the first Amateur win with Jerry Renner second and Robert Fuller the win in the Expert go nullifying Jeff's third moto win and movmg Boo up a place, breaking his tie with Gary. It was weird but a more evenly matched one would be hard to find. Jeff Zwoster also won the 250 Amateur Short Track sharing the split class with Open winners Robert Fuller and Gary Kaufeld. Randy Hoff making one of his rare F I a t Track appearances since his conversion to motocross hasn't lost his touch and handily won the ovice Short Track. Jimmy Johnson and Bill Robb were second and third. Charles Soderstrom and Jim Wrigh t had three nip and tuck races in the combined 175-200 Amateur/Expert Short Track. Both riders were tied for the lead in the final moto. I t's hard to say who got out on top with both of them dragging down the straights and running up each others back wheel in the turns. It was Charles at the finish with the first overall. Barry Tolson won the Amateur Division over Gary White. Ricky. NaymoJa . won the Open Mini-Cycle class on a 100cc Mini Enduro and then crashed the motorcycle ranks by winning the 100cc Escape Country M X - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Mike Capalite TRABUCO CANYON. CAL., Nov. 12, 1972 - Rains that have lashed the Orange Coast for the last few days have put the Escape Country track in beautiful shape and a record number of riders were on hand to appreciate it. II was the big-bore tum to start first this time and Andy Bolander (Suz) grabbed the win in the First Day class with John Burkey (Yam) doing it in tht Beginners. Mike Reber (CZ) topped the Novices while Jerry Van Dellen (Maico) was first Amateur after his Maico died on the st:uLing line. By virtue of his showings in the last two rno tos, he took the win and top money in the Expert class. With the 250s being one of the big classes of the day, the division winners had their work cut out for them as they were: Tirst Day, Mark Gaiser (CZ), Beginner, Greg Sokol (CZ), Novice, Dave Hall (Mai) , and Rick Smith (CZ) in the Amateur. Top 250 Expert money winner was Mike Gillman with Jack This bike frailer has a stove, 'fridge, shower, toilet, sleeps 6 and carries 5 bikes! ....... ~ Novice Short Track from Rick Younger and Craig Harbin who had problems. Vince Mead again won the Amateur/Expert Short track. Winning is becoming a regular habit with Vince but Steve Lyons who finished second overall is a strong contender who makes each of Vince's wins a little harder to come by. Troy Fisher who had problems just finishing the last couple of weeks was third. Riggi in second by only a spread of three points. By far the most popular clas. at Escape Country is the 125. With trophys going back eight and nine places in the First Day and Be~inner class, it would seem everybody has a 125. The First Day win went to Quirt Crawford on his Penton while Mike Edwards (Suz) was top Beginner and Robert Williams (Suz) was best Novice. The 100 and 125 Experts ran together with Kevin Crawford topping the 100s and Jeffrey Vidi.c doing it to the 125s. Top Powder Puffer of the day was 1 ancy Daggs (Yam) with Kathy Brockman taking second place. Gary Hicken took his Suzuki to the win in the 185 class. With all Mini-enduro en tries over 14 years of age having to go into the Expert class, it was Gary Tamietti winning the new class. In the First Day division, Dave Collins showed the Yamaha's the way as he took his Honda to one second and two firsts to win the class. Not to be outdone, Honda riders then dominated the rest of the Mini-enduro class with Duane Mapes in the Beginner, Geoff Singer in the Novice and Jeff Wilson in the Amateur. I t looks like some of the hot-shoe Yamaha riders are going to have to come out and defend the glory of Yamaha. .-. Jim Makos (Yam) led the way for three motos to take first in the Open Expert race. His brother Ken (Yam) stayed on his rear wheel for second with Donne Watkins taking third on a Honda. The 125 Division 11 race had a large cheering section, half going for Perris IT hot shoe Mark Jones (Yam) the other half for young John Downes (Hus). It was a close race but Mark Jones kept his front wheel on the 'ground long enough to take first with Downes second and Dave Ring (Yam) third. It was J one's first Motocross attempt after 3 years of IT racing. Many riders rode two classes, the most noticeable being Jim Elkins (Yam). Jim was first in 250 Division n' and second in the Open class. By the end of the day the course became more demanding as the whoop-de-doos got bigger and the water hole oozier.
