Indian Dunes MX by John Grout VALE CIA, CAL., Nov. 5, 1972 - It was quite simply a matter of too much Russ Darnell on too much motorcycle during today's ACE motocross at In<;lian Dunes. Owing to a rather light rider turnout, Darnell, who campaigns among the large-bore Expert-ranked racers, found himself competing in a combined group thal included 125's, 250's and 500cc bikes. He was to beat all three divisions with long-yardage victories each and every trip to lhe starting post. Jim Gappa (Bul) led the first moto . for a number of laps; while Robin Clark (CZ) pulled the same stUDt in the class finale. Darnell, however, zoomed righl on past in both instances. Overall Expert/Senior results were: Open - Darnell, Ernie Hendrix (AJS) and Jerry Jones (Bul); 250 - Clark, Gappa and Jim Burnett (Bul); 125 Steve Roberts (Hod) and Dave Montgomery (Mnk). John Pfeiffer, mounted in the sadelle of a reportedly Iibox-stock" Sachs, kept his Dunes win streak- intact at the expense of a large number of 125 Juniors. And now, the heat's on: John, a 19-year-old whirlwind who does his racing for the Revell Speed Shop in Sun Valley, is about ripe for graduation to the Pro ranks... Jim Smith on his CZ smoked everyone on aJl three matos, followed by Steve Diehr (CZ) and Ollie Senechal (Yam) in second and third overall positions. The 125 Intermediates and Seniors went off the line together and Bob Hoover completely dominated the Intermediates on his DKW and furthermore ended up racing between the likes of Zahrt and Vidic. The race belween, Jeff Vidic (Pen) and Ken Zahrt (DKW) in the 125 Seniors was something else. Jeff Vidic of Glendale took home lhe payroll for the 125 Experts, with Ken Zahrl of Canoga . Park second and Dave Mon 19omery also from Glendale content for third overall on his Monark. The three fifteen-minute moLOS of the 250 l!'ltermediales and Seniors combined was the biggest crowd thriller of the en tire day. The leaders Ken Zahrt on his Bul and Ray Topham on his CZ put on one of the tigh test races to be seen for some time. Although they were an entire half-lap ahead of the field, they remained widlin inches of each other playing a game of see-sawall day long. Ms. Pennington, about as fine a competitor as comes along, had moto finishes of 2-2-1. Ln one of the day's most hotly-contested series,' Ken t Benson (Ossa) and Bultaco-mounted Ruben Garcia entered the final round with identical 700-point scores - so what happened? The. two riders, both of whom were ,facing 250 Beginners, arrived at the last flag' - in a dead heat. .. A straight-edge between both front tires to determine an actual winner would have produced a wasted effort; that's just how close they were. I hope they both Rot trophies. They put on one helluva performance! In 250 Junior warfare, Maico-riding Mark Taylor grabbed 1,100 points while defeating, among others, Phil Fortney and Tim Davison. By 'virtue of winning two matos, Mike Cartledge (Hod) was overall 100 Junior victor. While Bruce Carpenter, Wayne King and Dan Branfman fought a day long struggle among Open Juniors, before finally finishing in that order. Beginner wirtners included: Chuck Cartledge (100), Mike Lacy (125) and Del Pragnell (Open). The best thing that ever happened to a chain.
