Some of the specialized, exotic cross-country machinery boggled the mind.
Smuggler Enduro & Poker R u n - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Allan Smethurst
CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL., Nov. 4,
1972 - The first event was the slow
race, ten riders lined up to navigate a 50
yard course as slowly as possible.
Sounds like a cinch; not really.
Next event was a real bust; riding
double with a balloon tied to your
passenger's back, armed with a club
made ou t of newspapers. Ten riders and
passengers rode in circles trying to
smash their opponents balloon, or
anything else to eliminate him.
Sunday morning's event was the
poker-run and enduro. Riders had their
choice of two COl:rses; the family course.
or the hot-shoe course.
My son and I rode the family course
which provided twenty miles of fun
trails and fire roads. I met riders of all
ages; youngsters to grandfathers, al~
enjoying themselves.
The hot shoe course was fifty miles
of rugged terrain with some really trying
up-hills and steep rocky down-hiIls.
After the enduro - poker-run, the
drawings were held with first prize being
a J oumeyman trailer valued at over
$1,600 dollars. It was won by 9-year old
Connie
Broussard riding a 60cc
mini-enduro. (Now she has something to
pull with her minjoo.Ed.)
If IT'S
But if hard~ore enduro competition isn't your bag, you can always resort to the gamec; of
chance.
