.. CD M Champion Speedway Marathon " '" '" by Patrick Neil SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., Oct. 28, 1972 - Rick. Hocking and Chris Willems battled it out for the number one spot in the Marathon Series being put on by the All American MC at Champion Speedway today. Hocking grabbed lbe lead with Chris Willems jamming it along in second spot. Willems has been taking most of lbe winnings at lbe Marathon taces since that form of racing has been gelling popular in the north lately. However, Hocking and his teammate Corry Paz put it togelber today and ran away wilb the first place finish in the 250 class. Rick and Chris were swapping the lead back and forth for about 30 minutes, when Willems pulled off the course to check his sticky throllle. Unfortunately, he pulled right into about 18 inches of old oil and steer manure. It seems that last week's rains had aJIowed an accumulation of mud, manure, and old oil from the near-by Cow Palace, junk yards, and train yards to form a lake. The lake had dried up some, leaving a cracked layer of hard surface above the 18 inches of goo. When Willems decided to puU off, it looked safe enough. However, he was up to the hubs before he could ~top the forward and downward progress of the disabled CZ. This reporter ran to his aid, not knowing the true depth of the problem, and sank up to his shins, destroying a favorite set of boots while trying to play hero. Everyone always says I'm full of B.S., and I think that can be taken literally from now on. So much for the B.S. Hocking and Paz went on to win the 2[.1) class event.
