.. N g> 11. N ..... a> .. ~ Z ~ w Z W -J U > U 395 has it all - from mighty ... To mini. 395 TT and Half·Mile ... by Imogene Rees ADELANTO, CAL., Oct. 28, 1972 - A lot of new faces made the scene at 395 tonight. The spectators made their own scene, wrapped up .in blankets and standing around big fires to watch the racers go at it. First race to go was the mini·bikers. Rich Hooper grabbed the lead and held it all the way, with Dan Anderson taking second and Jeff Hooper third. Gary Evans (Kaw) socked it to 'em in the 100 TT. Gary is showing a much improved racing form in the last few weeks. The pressure is on for the top ten riders of the season and Gary's pushing hard to be part of the deck. Chris Morland took second on a stock Kawasaki after blowing his 250 Bul in practice. In the Half·mile, it was Gary Evans again, giving him his first double win. From the look on his face he had a hard Perris TT --.;._ _ time believing he won the whole thing: Chris Morland (Kaw) had a figh t on his hands for second with Karen Roderick (Yam), who had a nasty spill in the TT. You sure couldn't tell it by the way she rode the Half·mile. Chris gave it all he had, took second; with Karen taking third. In the 125 class, Greg Wilburn (Yam) and Terry Griner (Yam) went at it tooth and nail. It was elbow·to·elbow all the way, with Greg taking the lead at the halfway mark and hanging on to the flag. Terry took second. In the Half-mile, the front row had a time keeping their wheels on the track. When they got settled down, th.e fight was on again between Greg Wilburn (Yam) and Terry Griner (Yam). Terry had it till the last lap, when Greg let it all out and took the checkered first. Jeff Clark (Bul) grabbed the lead in the 250 TT. Greg Delecate (Bul) tried hard to find a place to pass, but Jeff had other ideas and held it on to take first. Greg had to settle for second. In the Half-mile, Jeff bad it again but ran into some trouble and came out third. Jim Nosek (Bul) grabbed the brass with second going to Jeff Wiles, a newcomer to the track. In the Open Novice, Tom Howe (H.D) and Dan Rees (Suz) had it all to themselves, figh ting it au t for first and second. Tom had the edge, taking first, and Dan took second. They wen t at it again in the Half·mile with Dan holding it all the way until the very end when Tom was first under the wire by a nose. Steve Sisco (Kaw) did his thing again in the All-Expert TT. He shot out in front and gave the rest of 'em something to chase. Pat Dale (BSA), who says he feels like the Godfather out there with ...... by Elaine Jones PERRlS, CAL., Oct. 21, 1972 - It's getting to be wintertime at Perris but it sure hasn't cu t down the riders or the spectators. There are a few 100 Novices that have been transferred to Amateur, or will be in the not too distant future. Pat Shea got the word as he picked up his trophy for winning the 100 Novice IL Craig Harbin and Jeff Henry, winners of Divisions I and Ill, had better start taking a close look at those fast boys because one more win for each of them should do it. John Karns, a. recent transfer, showed he had the stuff as he won the 100-125 AM-Ex go. He did it against seasoned veterans Steve Bales and Donald Ray. Derek Katanic Was plagued with mechanical problems· that forced him into early retirement. TrojanSpeedway by Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., Oct. 26, 1972 Heavy favorit." Jamey Blunt (Oss) was fast enough, but not long enough, and as a result Bob Sanders, a four-divisional track champion, tonight enjoyed his third 50-lap 250 TT Championship race afte r regaining the lead on the thirteenth lap Thursday night.at Trojan Speedway. Blunt dropped from contention due to a broken wheel bearing. From the start of the 50-lap grind, Sanders (Kaw) set a torrid pace with clear indications of going wire-to-wire after taking the jump over the 15·rider field with Blunt trailing in second by the end of the first lap. On the fifth lap, Blunt caugh t SaaMn as' they headed ror- ttim· ttl'ree all those kids, rode his old BSA hard but Steve' couldn't be caught and took his second Expert trophy two weeks in a row. Steve was off first again in the Half·mile. Ray Martin (Yam) came up from second, giving him a figh t and taking over the lead. Steve had to settle for second in this one. He turned the Half-mile in 33 seconds, with the record at 31 seconds. All this on a 100 Kawasaki and 11 years old isn't half bad. H.R.A. will begin day racing next Sunday, November 5th. Sign up 8 A.M. Practice 9 A.M. Races begin at 10 A.M. H.R.A. Fourth Annual Award Banquet will be December 2 at the Sands Restaurant in Riverside. Tickets will be on sale next week at the track. . $4.25 a ticket, all you can eat, dancing, and a nigh t of all-around fun. _ Don't think it bothered him too much, though, because his Dad has finally relinguished his 350cc Kaw to Derek, who really screams on it and has campaigned very successfully. There were two 125 Novices who were faster than the Am-Ex riders, so needless to say Vern Maxwell and Brent Knaver won their Divisions. There was some fancy trick riding or what ever you want to call it but it turned into a freak accident with one ruined hike the end result. I think it was Brent Knaver and another rider who came across the line with the front wheels up in the air. Well, things got out of control and they collided sending one rider down the straight-away in a belly slide. ~eanwhile, the bike pole vaulted the divider, cenier-punching a poor soul who Was warming up his machine, and came to rest with a completely destroyed front wheel. The inner-tube even tried to get away! The poor guy that got center punched is still trying to figure out where the guided missile came from. Ricky Hart took advantage of the situation by slipping in there for a third. Steve Bales was back to his winning ways in the 175-200 go. John Shipley Was. in for a solid second and Willie Hardin third. Rick Barnes, Mike McEown, Kevin McHugh and Bill Fulton each won a Division of the four 250 Novice goes. The 250cc' were coniing out of the woodwork with every class a big one. What's hard to figure out is, with all the Novices, how come so few Amateur·Experts? I can't, in all fairness, say Doug Mason got beat, even though he finished second overall. Doug started out on the Cooper but the bugs still haven't been straightened out and he got a DNF the first heat. He then switched to his Bul and Was back on form. No credit should be taken away from Tom uBonzai" Heard, the overall winner. Tom is a flashy rider who puts on a good show for the spectators and gives his fellow riders a run for their money. Carroll Heiland Was third. Walt Foster did it again in the Open Am-Ex but Steve Rob is getting closer and closer every week, which ain't too bad considering he's on a 350cc Harley and Walt's Wacky Racer checks out at a cool 750cc's. Jack McCafferty got the third. If the names look familiar it's because it's an instan t replay from last week. Jim Johnson and David Atkinson took. the Novice Moto goes. ~-~~-~~~---~--------------"""":"'-"":"":'__::___:_--"":"":'"""":'"-:-~ and surged into the lead. As expected, Blunt was qwck to stretch his lead over Sanders and for a brief few laps looked like Blunt was about to hide from the rest of his opposition. On lap thirteen, it Was aU over for Blunt as the game little rider came to a sudden halt in the fourth corner, leaving Sanders to lead the field all the way to the checkered flag. Mid-way in the race, the crowd in the stands as well as those in the pit area immediately chose Allen Swett as the "underdog" favorite as he was observed closing ground on Sanders. The next ten laps remained the same as far as positions were concerned. and Swett had cut Sanders' lead in half. On the 42-lap, Sanders held a seven second lead on Swett, and on a tight-COUl'S<: like 1'rojan'~,. th/sl)s' considered a comfortable margin. In the next three laps, Swett trailed Sanders hy only four seconds having picked up a second a lap. Swett ran out of laps as he crossed the finish line two seconds behind Sanders. In another sterling performance of the evening, Tom Doty (Han) grabbed his share of glory by ironically taking a spill on the first lap of the 125 TT Main. Doty, cutting it a bit too close as he attempted to take the lead as the field caine off the second comer, hit the tire markers and went down while the rest of the 14-rider field went by before getting restarted. Holding down last place, Doty picked up the chase as Steve Okuda (Yam), running away from the field, started to lap slower riders by the fifth lap, and on the sixth lap, instead of choosing his openings, and perh'lj>s, using a bit of track savvy with the lead he held, tangled with Mike Summers (Han) a much less experienced 'rider. Spilling to the ground, Okuda lost it all by the time he restarted as Rick Anderson (Han) picked up the lead. Doty, having picked his way from last, was second by the eighth lap and closing fast on Anderson. In a final burst of speed, Doty'caught Anderson on the last lap to climax a truly "come-from-behind" effort. _ Doty made it two wins for the night . as he scored his second straight win over Anderson in the 125 F.T. Main. This time leading wire-to-wire. . The 250 TT Trophy Dash could have been considered as a coming attraction of the 50-lap Main. Blunt, using a sensational form in cutting his comers, won over Sanders.
