Joe Veillon, out in front of the Open Experts, and on his way to an overall win.
by John Huetter
ELSINORE, CAL., Oct. 22, 1972
Heavy gray fog hung tenaciously in the
hills as the sounds of occasional engines
starting, tools clattering and mumed
voices came eerily through the swirling
mists. Predawn attack on the Afrika
Korps? An armored cavalry assault on a
Viet Cong position in the Central
Highlands? No, just a
idehack
Assn.-sponsored D-37 motocross, with
the would-be racers waiting for the
opportunity to get a look at the track.
The original good idea of running
ligh tweights in the morning and
heavyweigh ts in the af~ernoon got a
lillle screwed up. It was about eleven
before a weak sun burned off the fog
and the ligh tweigh ts wen t au t to
practice.
Now some riders maybe tried to
figure out in advance what Kind of
motocross course the Sidehack Assn.
would layout in and about the Elsinore
IT track. Undoubtedly it would be fast,
smooth and require plenry high gearing.
Or maybe some riders aren't as dumb as
this one. Surprise! The three-wheel
freaks fooled everybody.
The course was tight, rough,
off-eamber, and had two mudholes.

and fell down. The pair were first in their classes.
track was used, period. Anything more
than about 12 horsepower was wasted
and, if the extra horses were applied too
vigorously, they could get you into
trouble. On the first practice lap, the
course seemed more like an observed
trials section than a motocross track.
Maybe we're all getting too soft.
One of the most consistent
performances of the day came from
Danny Sanchez (MNK) who repeated
his former D-37 motocross win in the
125 Amateur class. Larry Bird was
ahead of him to be the first Expert and·
Jim Connolly (BuJ) overcame a dead
engine, hand-in-the-air start in the
second rna to to take second 125
Expert. Cherry Stockton (Bul) was
fastest PPer as the ladies ran with the
125 Novices.

proceeded to win the fust Am/Ex mota
as Tony Rogers (CZ), current district
Number One, drowned out in the sticky
mud. Rogers came back in the next two
motos and demonstrated how he got the
low digit by leading from start to finish.
Sixberry challenged, but got over-eager
and kept falling in the first few laps.
Steve Bebeck (CZ) followed Tony
around in the last two gas to end up
second Amateur ahead of Nate Sciaqua
(Vam). The lo~ Expert 250 turnout
assured Rogers the first in that class.
John Burr (CZ) riding for the shop of
the same name, did a very thorough job
on the Open Novices. By the last mota,
he had a c1earcut victory in hand. The
tight, choppy course didn't seem to
bother him at all.
Troy Hollis switcbed from Suzuki to
CZ and led the first Open Expert mota
to the checkered. By the end of the day,
however, Joe Veillon had his beautifully.
prepared Husky out in front of the
combined Am/Ex pack and stayed there
to take the overall Expert win. When
the points and scoring were sorted out
for the big bikes, Ken Markling (Suz)
had the top Amateur ride.
The back to back Open matos, with
just two classes running, had some quick
turnarounds, rapid gulping of green
stuff, and tired riders by the end of the
day. Most local MXers are used to more
tharr 20 minutes between motos. Maybe
we really are getting soft. It was nice,
though, not having to wait around all
day to run your three matos, even if a
little demanding on the bod.
Despite the late start, the Sidehacks
managed to finish up by 5: 30 and the
last of the heavyweights tiredly loaded
their scooters, caked with the drying
in....d. into vans and trucks. The "should
have dones", mental points calcuJating,
and course evaluation racketed around
the pits as the real race: for the freeway,
began.
