M N ~ CL N .... en ,; o z ~ z w W ...J U :> u Indian Dunes M X - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - : - - - - - - by John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., Oct. 29, I972 Greeted by a dry, ugh ming·action track, the large group of racers was about to learn - the hard way - what it's like when the "Bilton Boys" blow in to town. One with a 250cc weapon, the other with a big-bore howitzer. Terry and I5-year-old brother Matt Bilton - both members of Mortenson's Maico Maulers - each blasted to easy, three-for-three romps in their respective Senior/Expert divisions. Anything that the awesome twosome may have done wrong, was certainly not evident. Jeff Blix, who conducts his prairie warfare from the saddle of one of the new six-speed Monarks, lost his fmal moto to Hodaka Wombat-mounted Ray Byers, a rider for Omo's Cycle Shop in Oxnard. However, with a second in the last heat, Bux, who had already gained 800 poin ts during the first two rounds, was a lead-pipe cinch for day's overall honors . . Riding for Revell Speed Shop in Sun Valley, young John Pfeiffer had 800 points (a pair of win~) in his poke at the end of two divisional motos. But during that damn third heat - the same one that proved his undoing last weekend the plug on Pfeiffer's Yamaha again decided to develop an eight o'clock whisker. And he had a comfortable lead at the precise time. By virtute of victory in that final mo to, Terry Biner, who had scored a fourth and second in his previous motos, whipped Pfeiffer for overall brass by about 20 points. M,ini-cycle winners were Kenny Alexander for three straight triumphs, Reid Rondell, Jimmy Roszak and Brian Strong, who rides for Del Strong's Honda of Glendale. Alexander later disqualified himself, because, as a lO-year-old Expert rider, his sense of fair play would not allow his taking advan tage of the mini troops. An ACE double-header is on tap for this weekend at Indian Dunes Park. A Ufamily-style" enduro, featuring three, 1O-mile loops for all divisions, will be held on Saturday (N ovember 4). On Sunday, all-elass motocross returns to the demanding Shadow Glen course. AME Osteen's - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -............by Tom Corley POMONA, CAL., Oct. 29, 197·2 - After the race today 1 came up with one conclusion, the AME Motocross racers must be thrill seekers! Usually Jack Kell and Jim Appleby's American Motocross Enterprises will draw in a big stir of racers but rare do they see a turnout of racers like today at Osteen's Park in Pomona. I guess the ad in Cycle News saying that the race would be televised caused quite a commotion. The entries started to pour in and sure enough came 300 movie stars, all stringin' it out by doin slides, wheelies, cross,..ups and crashes in fronr of the Cable Vision Channel 10 carnera. Ray Lope< topped the 500 Seniors but this time he was racing a Maico 400. J Often in AME racing this money winning racer is seen on top of a Bultaco 125 like down at the Carlsbad AME track where he squeezes by without a whole lot of competition. Lopez, though fairly new in the 500 Senior racing circuit whipped other' greats like Maico racer Ken Ratzloff, Chuck Minert (BSA), Von Peterson (CZ) and Walt Axthem (Mai) finishing like that. While Lopez had the overall edge Minert, who usually wins in other associations at Osteen's, would grab the lead but would soon give way to the two-stokers. Channel 10 wiII continue more AME televised action again at Osteen's this coming Sunday so if you lead the pack cross-up for the camera. Centrifugal force. Baymare M~--------------------by Art Cox SOMIS, CAL., Oct. 19, 1972 - You had to ride it to believe it! Motorsport has added a new hill to the existing course just prior to the tunnel jump area that can only be described as "far out". Before practice most of the small class bikes were apprehensive about going up and over the hill, as it really looked impressive from the bottom. The spectators that gathered on the new hill really enjoyed watching the riders fly over the top. Bill Kelly on his big bore Husky riding with the Intermediates won first overall by gaining time on the other riders as he flew off the new hill. Beside winning the professional size trophy, he took home two free dinners at the Vikings res tau ran t in Oxnard, courtesy of Mr. Bob Spence. Jim Byrd, piloting a 250 Rickman for Hueneme Cycles, flew like an Eagle with great style and speed, and took home the Novice trophy for division A. ·Byrd is one of Baymare's top Novice riders. The only other 250 class rider that gave him any competition all day was CZ jockey Wayne Edwards. The Penrod brothers from Oxnard, riding super fast Honda SL-7 Os, took first and second mini bike overall. Maico man Tom Alexander easily won all three of his motos for a first Open Beginner trophy. Larry Baurn, also Maico mounted, wound up second. Tom Hainley, riding for Hueneme Cycles on what has to be one of the fastest king size CZ around, grand slammed the Open Novice class. Hainley, fast as well as smooth, seems to have absolute control of his bike at all times. Cherry Stockton threw her Bul around all day to win overall in the Powder Puff class with a first in each of her three motos. Seems like Cherry could use a little competition. During the experienced 100 Novice moios, Craig Eggerman (Suz) and Foster Chase (Suz) fought vigorously for the top overall. Eggerman wound up with the first spot. Using a new starting system, all 150 plus riders were able to each finish three fifteen minute motos by four PM. (What a welcome change from the prior long days.) Next weekend Experts will ride for a $300 guaranteed purse with a 100% payback. I,c;;;__~ ~->. I l ~ Bill Kelly found that the rules said that you had to be on your bike. The dtdn·t say that your bike couldn't be in your trunk.
