(j o Ul s: UJ z UJ ...J C,) ~ C,) AM~ Carlsbad by Tom Corley CARLSBAD, CAL., Oct. 15, 1972 Although todays turnout didn't come close to last weeks at Saddleback the racing fury is picking up with all classes and especially in the new beginner class as shown today where these racers were screaming. off the starting line in different races instead of bumping wheels together when going all at once. The class that was really smokin' with noisy chambers was in the sensationally big 250 Junior rally where Guatemala Ground Gripper ripper Tim ...;. _ Fox socked it to 'em for the second week in a row, blowing everyone off in the weeds and taking the super first overall win over 25 finishing racers. Fox had two racers Hughes and Watrol who had high hopes of placing in the first. position and kept on trying to buzz Tim but didn't have what it takes. Luckily 1 got some inside details from Eric Watrol about this 250 Junior race when 1 happened to run into him at Mac's on the way back from the race off of EI Taro road. Watrol seriously felt that he had a chance of zapping Fox and Hughes but "blew it" and let Hughes . take the checkered flag first. Jf you happened to read last weeks copy of Cycle News you may of read that article on the super CZ's of Tony Rogers and Greg Lee that were prepared by tuner E.C. Birt of Precision Cycle. Well today AME CZ Series winner Greg Lee brough t his trick of trick machines out to race and really shut down the 250 Intermediate class and won overall. Lee made the Senior racers CZ's power look kind of slug like. Jack Hazard (common EI Taro MX racer) hassled Lee in the CZ Series for points on his Bul 125 but today Jack tried to blast Lee on his Bul 250 in the same Intermediate class for the second place spotlight with Paul Arakawa CZ holding a third. Peter Maly' on his own CZ 250, Richard Grafton racing a CZ also, and Bob Brooks on a Suzuki were the top three Senior 250 racers. The Coast Moto Cycle man Maly made the others look motionless as he zonked everyone as usual no matter w1;0 the competition is. Grafton kept a-growling in the second position behind his buddy Pete and while Bob Brooks lost out on the 250 Senior money ending up in third. He bit the jackpot in the 125 Seniors to give himself something to celebrate about! Kelly (Hus) start the day out fighting each other for the lead in the Open Intermediate class. Hicks shot out in the lead with Kelly tailgating him for the first half of mota one, then Kelly slowed his pace to let Hicks stretch his lead for the checkered. Mota two started the same, however Kelly got around Mr. CZ' for one half lap until Hicks pulled a sharp maneuver and pulled in to the lead coming down the inside lane over the "Ant Hill". Ths sparked Kelly to really pout it on un til his- third gear blew up. Hicks won all three motos for the giant Intermediate trophy. In the 125 Beginners, Dale Wilds (DKW) flew like an Expert to win his class. Gharlie Angel (Pen) 1.1-1 again in the 125 Novice class has volunteered to move up to the Intermediate class. This guy is fast and will give Larry Burgess (DKW) (who won the 125 Intermediate class) some competition. Kent Reed (CZ) won the 250 Novice class, not too easily. Jim Byrd, Also a CZ jockey, put the pressure on in all three motos to take second. The Powder Puffer that was shaken up last weekend by being on the track with the Experts, came out today and won her class. Sue Minton is her name and Bultaco was the vehicle. Craig Egerman (Suz) easily won all three of his 100 Novice motos for a first overall trophy. . The happiest guy seen at the end of the day was Len Gillette. He piloted his Suzuki for his fIrst overall win at Baymare. Next Sunday will be an All Class Day with Experts/Intermediates riding together, but being scored separately. _ Novices will ride (-5) and (+5) classes. Super 40% trophies will be given the same day. For this day only, Expert entry fees will be the same as Novices. Baymare MX by Art Cox SOMIS, CAL., Oct. IS, 1972 - A light rider tumou t produced some excellen t racing at internationally famous Baymare. As is the policy of the new track management, 40% super trophies were given out at the end of the day. Roger Smith has set up a new entry procedure as well as a different method of -tabulating (esults that eliminated the confusion that was prevalent during the, previous Sunday's Expert/Novice day.
