...'" Spillway Park MX by Mike Anderson PhotOf by Steve French/Brooks Institute SANTA MARlA, CAL., Oct. 15, 1972 - Where some races lack exci temen t, the 100 Junior class never does ...tbat is, as long as Johnny Rogers is there, motoring his little Kawasaki around for his usual victory. Four foot taU Rogers again smoked the 100 Juniors to carry off a trophy almost as big as himself. Charles Halcomb zapped the 125 Junior Division A as did Steward Lily (BuI) in Division B. Stewart's victory wasn't so easy, as he had to ride against veteran Stoned Valley member John Little (Suz) who took second in that division. In the 125 Experts every one from second place on down broke or was plagued with mechanical problems, but even so no one could have possbily caught three-mota winner Vince Clark (Suz). The highlight of the class was in tlle second moto when San Luis Obispo rider, Jack Keese, who was in hot pursuit of Clark came off the mean Spillway jump only to have his Bultaco disassemble when he hit the ground. He was uninjured and carried off the forks and tank while his friends carried the remainder of his bike. "Hard luck" Mike Hamptori (Mai) won 'the first two motos of 250 A only to have bad luck in the third mota giving his seemingly easy victory to Mike Beardsly (Hus). Steve Rotundo (Bul) took the 250 Junior B victol;)' ahead of Mike Martin (Mai) who also won a moto. Ron Self made his debut on a 250 Maico and completely zapped the 250 Experts by winning all three inotos. The iirst moto found LeRoy Cushaway (Bul) in the lead for three laps. Self passed Leroy and took the win followed by John Caldwell (CZ), The second moto was the same except for David Czerwinski (Mai) who took second, moving Cushaway and Caldwell down a position. Cushaway looked for aU like 'he was going to be the second place man behind Self since Czerwinski had fallen in the ijrst moto, but going into the third round Leroy fell at the start and C aJdwell became the second place man behind Ron Self. The Open Expert class was something of a comedy. Joe Cushaway (CZ) burst into the lead in the first moto and built up a huge lead over Bob Rogers (CZ), who fell and broke: Doug Wies (Mai) , who broke down; and Scott Frisby, who was an In termediate; and then Joe's bike broke leaving Scott Frisby in first place. Scott held on for five laps until Greg Higgins (Bul) (who was long forgotten and the oaly Senior left up) passed him for the win. Then the second moto was an instant replay except this time everyone fell. By the third moto Cushaway got his stuff together and took the win while just playing around with Higgins, .Needless to say, Higgins won, with Joe second and Scott Frisby, by consistent and good riding, was first Open In term ediate. • ,'" '" N .... ell l1.
