Motocross at Santa Clara by Steve Castillo SANTA CLARA, CAL., Oct. 8, 1972More th an 300 sligh tly en th usiastic Junior riders and a whole army of spectators turned out today for the first race in a series of three Junior races to be held at Santa Clara's P.A.L. track. There were three divisions for the 125 class. One of the more interesting was the third Division. It was Steve Bargiacchi again on his featherligh t Husky out of Moore and Sons in Santa Cruz. C. Narog (Yam) took second. The 250 class also featured three Divisions. Division 1 featured the super-Swede Curt Berggren on his super-quick Husky. Charley Brown Cycles in San ta Cruz had riders wh<;> dominated the next two Divisions. Jerry Castillo dominated the 2nd Division on his Charley Brown CZ which is tuned by Dave Robison, also of CZ fame. Bruce Manzoni has been bugging me to pu t him in the paper. ..well he finally earned it as he won the 250 Division III very smoothly over rubber-man Len Macciharicca (Hus). There were two Divisions of the big bores with Jeff Mullins (Hus) of CMC North fame carting away all the marbJes. R. Hart took second in that race. The second Division was dominated by Guy Conburn, second went to Larry Nebb .. Placerville Night MX by Bruce C. Young PLACERVILLE, CAL., Oct. 5, 1972 Rick Cormier, nicknamed the human road block, kept the crowd on its reet tonight at the last race of the season. Even though this was in the Open Novice Division Rick and another rider, Bob Fine, put on the finest and closest race of the night. In the first mota it was Fine who came out on top but not without a batde royal from Cormier_ Both riders rode Suzuki 400's and in the second round Fine led it off with Cormier almost dead last. At the white flag lap Cormier had worked his way to righ t behind Fine and on the final run to the checkered it was Cormier who took the fran t position and won the race. Two riders from Caimans Husqvarna of Stockton, Mike Jennings and Floyd Davis, won the 125 and 250 Expert races hands down. Kurt Killian did his thing in the 125 Amateur class by winning overall, on a DKW. An interesting bike in this class was a bike known right now as a "Battle Manufacturing" 'of England. It is powered by a 125 Sachs engine and was ridden by Mark Gibson. If it hadn't been for a weak brake lever that kept bending Mark might have won. This new Argyll Park MX by Reese Ultz DIXON, CAL_, Oct. 8,1972 -In a near perfect dl\Y, the Sacramento Racing Association hosted a field of 300 riders in a full day and about 15 minutes of night motocross. A combination of 18 separate classes running two motos each, coupled with a delay in ·course . preparation, caused the last moto to be run in near darkness. In the Mini-Matos, Mark 'Shumate dominated the Junior Mini-Bike competition, as did Scott Henry and Danny Chandler in the Upper and Lower divisions of Senior Mini-Bike. Patrick Hughes wrapped-up the 100 honors. With three divisions of 125 Novice, top honors went to Casey Faucett, Craig Shulz and Milo Marsh. 125 Amateur fell to Mark Gibson, and Danny Turner, who has just returned to motocross from a recendy broken leg, copped the 125 Expert win_ Top brass in the four divisions of 250 Novice went to Bill Klein, Rusty Jones, Neal McCarthy, Jr., and Paul Norman. Up-and-coming Mike Hart grabbed the 250 Expert win and Rohert Willis wrapped-up the 250 Amateur class. Jan Johnson, another fast-rising motocrosser, and Jack Hampton out-pointed the competition to pick-off the big one in the two divisions of Open Novice. Alan Christian scored top billing in Open Amateur and the Open Expert win went to Henry Halbach.
