... Lightweights TT Scrambles' by Ed Drechsler ADELANTO, CAL., Oct. 8, 1972 Charlie Soderstrom showed the troops that he c.an very well handle the 200 and 250 classes. Riding with an absolutely brilliant style. Charlie proved to everyone why he is Numher One in the lightweight point standings. You can pretty well figure that he has the 175/200 class sewed up. A lot of guys have tried, but very few have ever won i'n "Charlie's Class." Up to a few weeks ago, Charlie just couldn't get it together in the 250 class. He would half·seriously go out to see what he could do, but. usually ended up putting around with the pack learning the feel of the sligh t1y larger bike. He never really looked like he was at home on a 250. His familiar super slidin' style looked choked up and he made mistakes. A new frame and a whole lot oJ confidence have put that time into the past. Charlie looks at home in both classes now. A lot of activity in the 100 Expert class has gone unnoticed by the vast majority of scrambles fans. Mike Laney has been out to beat the giants. In his case, the particular giant is Kawasaki. Mike rides a trick Hodaka that you have got to see. Plugging away at every point nm, Mike's name shows up in the rc;sults column almost every time. When it doesn't, you can bet that he had some bad luck (100 class). The Kawasaki's have been invincible in TT for a long time, yet Mike has beat '" '" '" "N ..... 0> ...... Ah, but not today. Mike finished second behind, Wayne Whisenant who was really cooking the track. Vic Hensley ou trode the rest 0 f the pact to take a third. Brian King se.ems to be getting it back together. After a period of bad luck, caused mostly by poor machine Mark Devereux leads a group of 250 Novices. HOT HATS I preparation, Brian, who this year was a Novice, knocked off Rex Hailey., Dave Gailliot and a host of others to win the brass in the 125 Expert class. Welcome back, Brian. Current heavyweight point leader, Kirk Redding, rode the 500 Expert class like he really wanted to win. Vince Graves and Tommy Jarnagan rode like they wanted the win also - and the race was on. Kirk won all three lfiotos. Tommy did poorly in the first moto, but bounced back to do well enough in the next two for a third overall. Vince Graves hung in there to take a second overall. John Sprague, Vic Hannon and Bob Greenstreet rook the top three places in the Open Expert class. It would have been Triumph I, 2, 3 but Bobby changed brands a couple of weeks ago. His new Yamaha is a work of art with a plated frame, trick 'glass and everything. It does go fast, but today it managed only third. At the sign·up shack, a few of us 500 Novices had a horse laugh as our ole buddy Richard Denham pushed his Maico up to Tech Inspection. On this plate was a shiney new yellow color identifier. The District has transferred him to Amateur status and today was to be his first ride with the new c1assifjcation. Well, a lot of us have been saying that the Novices go as fast as the Amateurs and now was our chance to prove it. Our hopes wore riding on him. During th, first moto, Rich worked his way through the pack to second - place, lost one position, got it back and overshot turn two. The second and third motos were less spectacular with Rich finishing in the pack. It is easy to sit back and bench race his race, bu t he still did well. The lady is a fox-and the mother of two. We expect him, with the dedication he has, to go on the to be a real threat. We know how fast he rides. Now the rest of you are going to find out. The 125 Amateurs had to stand back and take notice as the second place rider was a girl. Elaine Smith beat a whole bunch of guys but not Steve Fortune. He got the overall win. <:)00' 75 cents Cycle News "Dept. CNP ~O ); P.O. Box 498 Long Beach, Ca. 90801 ___~~.....W;,:,A=-TCH REGULARLY FOR OUR COMPETITION SPECIALS ...
