The outcome was one which proved that the South shall rise again. In· the Novice main, it was the north riders sweeping the first four positions. Rick Hocking' did a beautiful job of disappearing, leaying everyone in his dust. All this after a restart following an unexpected tie for the same spot on the course involving Mike Renslow and Pat Hennen. Both Hennen and Renslow were unhurt and made tl,e restart. The best race of the en til"e program was for second, third, and fourth in the Novice Main. Hennen scooted by Renslow on lap five to nab second. In the final lap, and in the final fifty feet, John Gennai showed the slyle which makes him one of the hottest Novices in nat track, passing Rt;nslow to lake third place. The Junior Main saw Ivan Shigemasa lead the first two laps until he got off the grove. The lead changed and it looked like a walk-away for Jim Crenshaw, but, after taking the white flag, mechanical trouble returned the lead to Shigemasa with Gary Lozano, Mike O'Brien and Tom Phillips running right behind. In the Trophy Dash, you would have thought Dave Aldana had never kissed a girl before and didn't want to miss his big opportunity. He set a blistering pace which left Gillespie, Brelsford, and Greg Hodges almost'a straightaway behind. Needless to say, Aldana proved that he had some experience at kissing girls by doing one of his now famous over the tank lip locks. After a short break, to let the Trophy Girl (Kathy "Sugar" Plumb) regain her composure, the fifteen-lap Main was given the green flag, Again, Dave Aldana must have left the other riders wondering what his hurry was. By the half-way mark, Aldana was five seconds mead of everyone. s~ clJ}t'rlENTO JfA 'F~!'AIJE ,,.. ! . 1 \ Dave Hansen leads but Aldana is thinking about it. Bill Spencer photo.
