.. -: '" Fremont Scrambles ~ ll. N by Bill Spencer ~fk~MvO~lien~~ ;;.,J~~' ~o~o;:; :;; S:Ii>/ 0' Montesa have been consistently closing the overall poin t gap on Jerry Kole and with 5 point races left to run, Kole is running scared. ~ In tlte 250 Expert Main where all the ~ points are garnered, Kole had an engine w seizure in the main that left him 13 pointless. That combined with >- - VanLienden's win in the 500 Expert U class, over Kole, incidentally, brought the gap down to 10 poin ts. VanLienden is pumped for the overall win while Kole has vowed to sweep the rest of the series as he wan ts the Blendzall trophy. In that 250 run. it was once again Alex Jorgensen in firm control aboard a Champion Race frame Kawasaki. Alex is also catching Butch Davidson for the district high point title but that may take some months to decide as the series lasts until the end of November and there are still lots of races. Taking second was Mike Kalamaras who had his hands full of Kole until Kole has his a '" problems. 'Kole was apparen tly trying to make a pass on Kalamaras going through the infield and going up the ramp to the jump found the D & D Bultaco having its troubles. The resulting crash encoun tered Mike Allen who was in process of flying over the jump and wben gravity did its thing Mike was sideways to the track and only terrific riding ability averted a tragedy as Allen held on and low sided the Mon tesa after some terrible tank slappers. In the 650 Expert run it was once agail:> Kalamaras with Jorgensen swapping spots with him for second. The fight for second and third was similar to the 250 one with Bill Landsborough dicing with Alex and crashing very hard at the end of the fourth lap in the first comer. Bill was shaken bu t otherwise unhurt. His biggest bitch was that he hadn't put any points between himself and Jack Scroggins who is only a poin t behind in that fight for high point honors. Scroggins had missed the main, and Landsborough had a chance to earn some mighty neat points until he went down. -NORCAL SCRAMBLES Chowchilla Scrambles .: by John Crawford CHOWCHILLA, CAL., Sept. 16, 1972 - After suffering a disappointing tum out last night for the short track, the Broadsliders MIC had a tum out tonigh t that was a surprise in the other direction. The 50 N ovice-J unior saw Vern Salyers get a tremendous holeshot on the rest of the pack. Ve.rn was chased by Jim Mcintyre, Ken Magee and Novices Ricky Talley and Don Howard. Coing into the first tum of lap two, Mcintyre drove in super deep under Salyers to slip by into a lead he held to the flag. Tiny Mike Powell got the ju'mp on the 70 Xovice ahead of Brett Collins and Stan Hawkins. Then Collins got the drive on Mike Powell exiting the last tum of lap one to drive in to the lead, which he held to the end_ Joey Villanueva got an ideal start in the 100 Novice ahead of Bren t Tatum and Paul Falvey, but through the right-hander, Falvey snuck around the outside of Tatum for second. Coming out of the last tum of lap one, Jim Tumey slipped out high and drove around of Tatum for third, then exiting the last tum of lap two did the same thing to Falvey. Entering the first tum of lap three, Tumey stayed on the gas longer to get under and by Villanueva. John Hollis picked up his second win of the weekend in the 100 Junior, but definitely with out the co-operation of Phil Waters. Jim Conway, Bud Sturgill and Mike Van Dyke had a three way battle for the lead of the 125 Novice, with all three holding the lead at one time or another. At the fmish, Conway held the margin over Sturgill and Van Dyke. Darren Scltmidlkofer got a great Stockton Benefit Scrambles by Bill Spencer STOCKTON, CAL., Sept. 17,1972 Alex Jorgensen got to race in his town today and became the home town hero with a wire to wire win in the 250 Expert class and just to top it off the 10 points awarded for that class brought him 4 points doser to district point leader Butch Davidson who finished fifth in the main. This annual event held at the San' Joaquin county fairgrounds drew another outstanding crew of Amateur riders and the benefit for the retarded of Stockton was again successful. While this even t is not of the same size as that of the E & R S 'inas event, it is steadily growing and with the five clubs that host the scrambles it could tum into another of the Salinas type that does so much good for charity each year. For Jorgensen and !tis Kawasaki win, an additional feather must go in his cap as the man he beat for the day was none other than Jim Foley the man that • carries the No. I plate that Alex would ,,'like to have for 1973. Foley had ••troubles after a fast start when he start in the 125 Junior and never looked back at the battled waging between Scott Calloway and Richard Ilorton for second. Horton survived a near disaster in his duel with Calloway, but somehow managed to keep uprigh t, and had to settle for third. Neil MacDannald won the drag race with Mike Keith to the first tum and that was that as far as the lead was concerned, although Keith was never more than a bike length behind and Rick Delgado came in third in the 125 Expert. Paul Boothe led a parade in the 175 Novice, although Ken Thiebaud was never far behind and was in tum, being chased by Richard Eldred. Don Cox charged righ t into the lead of the 200 Novice ahead of Russ Conrad and Cary Minor. Conrad slipped ou t to the berm in the first ~um of lap twO and first Minor then Randy Kincade moved through for second and third, which they held to the checker. Dave Baker anticipated the starter perfectly in the 200 Junior to get a fantastic start in his second win of the weekend. Tim Phillips started in second and Stan Champlin was third off the line. Phillips and Champlin then proceeded to put on the best show of the night, passing and repassing at least once each lap, most times more. In fact, s.o ingrossed were they in their own private duel that Roger Mathews went to the high groove and blew around both in the first tum of lap fOUT. At the checker, Baker had the win wire to wire, chased by Mathews and Champlin. Bob McClure picked up his second win of the weekend and was chased again by Jim McAleer all the way. In third was Don Roberts riding a trick feet up style from start to finish. Isn't that a rather strange looking left boot, Don? fight off Cary Lozano who finished third. The 650 Expert battle was a real thriller as Jorgensen's very fast BSA gave up the cause on the second lap while Phil Anderson decided that his father Tom had led the race long enough, one lap. Phil got by his dad with a wave and a smile and proceeded to open up a lead over Lee Seidel who "ad also gotten by the elder Anderson. Seidel who had problems in the heat with a slipping clutch but was running . strong and smooth for the main. On the third lap, Anderson's BSA succumbed to the slipping clutch troubles and he slipped to second. Lee marched his Triumph home for the win. Byron Robeck got it all together in the 200 Jr. Main after a layoff of some months from the trophy stand and it may be attributed to the fact that father, Bud, was on hand to do some cheering. Once again Steve Burgess brought the Larry Smith BSA 500 MX in for the checkered and this kid is going to be an Expert before he knows it. Burgess is the hottest thing on the market these days and hasn't lost a ,race in sOme '.',~.Jllal\·l· .hb.tQ'.W.\:'QW. ·#o;.fJ}lI8.·.f9.':.'~!.·:.':.' , ... ., ,.. .. . ".... ...... .'. . Well, at least he was fIrst.
