CMC Ascotby Buzz Baty/Creative Images GARDENA, CAL., Sept. 27,1972 - If Tim Hart ever learns how to get his DKW off the line faster, you migh t as well pack up and head for home 'cuz boy, does he fly once he finally does get rolling. But, tonigh t at Ascot Park's CMC Motocross, "finally" wasn't quick enough and Charlie Bower turned the PenlOn trick again in the 125 Senior class all three motos. Hart invariably gets one of the worst (I f not the worst.) starts you'd ever hate to have. Tonight he was last into the first tum twice and the other time he got lucky and got a hole shot on one rider. At Ascot...you know what that means. Yet Tim just dove in and began the chase. Within three laps he had passed just about everybody. That "just about" means little Charlie Bower was flying away from everyone and was just . too far to catch. But Tim tried his dangdest and dem near caugh t Ch uck several times. Mark Tyer was hard pressed to restrain Hart and succeeded only in the final moto which earned him a third overall. As bad as Tim is off the line in the 125; the exact opposi te is true in the 500. He much more respectably wound out the throttle to the limit, zig-zagged around a couple of dudes and had the lead before the ducks in the south pond even had a chance to see the first lap action. From then on it was a figh t for second. Yamaha-mounted Ollie Senechal had his pit crew up and cheering when he took the lead in the second moto from the start, just as Ken Zahrt had done in the first but up came Hart and zapped 'em. Meanwhile, Alvin Blain was achumin'his wheels too and soon began controlling the bid for second overall, which be earned after two seconds and a third. The show of the night, however, came. in the 250 ranks as Bob Hosford and Jim MacDonald put their potent H 0 ndas up against the American Motocross flash, Rich Eierstedt. Although the overall win was to be decided by the final moto tie-breaker, Hosford could be declared the clear victor. He pounded out an insurmountable lead in the first, was bolding the point in the second before dropping it hard off the jump and remounting in third; then winning the final. Eierstedt won the second round atter finishing third in the first, which had nearly a three way tie going into the decider. In that, MacDonald slid out and lost his chances at overtaking either Rich or Bob, who fough t for the lead. Rich closed to within 10 yards at the end, but points are what count and Bob had more. MacDonald held for third overall. " o ~ w Z W ..J U >- U Tim Hart got ahead in the CMC 500 Expert class and stayed there for the overall; look second in the 125 Expert. CMC Lions Motocross _ _~ by John Bethea/Creative Images Photos by Buzz Baty WILMINGTON, CAL., Sept. 29, 1972 Charlie Bower got a 30-yard handicap tonight in that match race for alj size bikes, but he didn't need it...he won by 30 yards on his 125 Penton over Dave Pessy and Ken Zahrt. As usual, Charlie also picked off the three·for-three win in the 125 Senior show, but he had to come from seventh place in the final moto to do it, a la Hart...who wasn't here tonigh t at Lions CMC Motocross. Not only wasn't Tim Hart here, but a lot of the other weekly shoes apparently r.~I~LER 1032 W. BROOKS ST· ONTARIO.CA 91762 714 opted tonight's race for Saturday's biggie out at Ontario. Without them, still, the program was ou tstanding. Pessy pushed h is Ossa to the lead and win the first two 250 class motos. but in the third he and Bower (on a 175 Penton) tangled off the line and both went down. The duo had battled fiercely in ti,e class all nigh t and this spill was just bound to happen sooner or later. Pessy got restarted first, picked up the chase but could never have caught Joe Johnson who sped away for the win. Pessy still cJaimeti the overall title and Bower eased in for second with -. 0.... ..i? CRASH AND BURN LTD. ~ -~.:. ~ 'II 983'587~ Johnson third. When it came to the 500 class, Pessy was not to be reckoned with as he plopped himself in the lead and _pulled away _ Only Zen Zahrt had any chance at keeping pace, l:iut when the checkers flew, Ken was a distant second each lime. The Friday nigh l motocross show should be back into full swing this week as most of those not present tonigh t should appear while we all wait the return of the oilier top pros who are curren tly follOWing the Trans·AMA circuit. .~ ~ -:.-:.-;:: 0 ~ '''~~~Q ~ ~'\,,»~ Q~'~.-...:'~ ~ ~ • .cH I .~ 508 West Naomi West Arcadia, Calfornia 911006 ULTIMATE DESIGNS FOR RACERS (213) 446-0085 Ext. 53 'TIRED of PEEP FREAKS PEERING INTO YOUR VAN??'
