Grossi Grabs Support Class
. by Gary Van Voorhis
Bob Grossi (Hus) led only one lap in
the two support class motos ...but it was
the lap that counted. Grossi pulled in
front of leader Peter Lamppu (Kaw) on
the white flag lap of moto two when
Lamppu found himself boxed behind a
slower rider. Grossi turned the wick
while a frustrated Lamppu had to play
dodge-em catch-up for the last lap.
The win put G(ossi with a 3-1 overall
fmish; Lamppu with a 2-2 andJim West
(Hus) with a 1-3 causing a three-way tie
for overall winner. Grossi got the nod
on the basis of his win in the last (tie
breaker) moto; Lamppu taking second
with West third.
Moto one fell to the hustling Husky
of Jim West with a 20 second margin
over Kawasaki
mounted Peter
Lamppu_ Lamppu managed to stay close
in the opening laps but West seemed to
enjoy running full throttle on the super
fast parts of the course picking up much
of his lead. Bob Grossi (Hus) and John
Borg (Bul) began the,r move up through
the pack and eased into third and fourtft
by lap five with the positions .e'Versed
on the eigh th tour.
Ron DeSoto (CZ), Bill Grossi (I-Ius),
Gary Bailey (Bul), Gary Ingham (Mai)
and Gary Semics (Hus) made up their
own special race for fifth running wheel
to wheel most of the time. Borg
managed to hold on to fourth for good
with Bill Grossi and Gary Bailey
rounding out the top six.
John Borg grabbed the lead in moto
two, spending the next three laps
holding off first DeWayne Jones (Yam)
and then Lamppus before a slow leaking
tire forced him to slow. Lamppu b~gan
to ease away while JOnes was having to
fight off a determined Bob Grossi and
Gary Bailey. Grossi slipped by Jones on
lap seven while Bailey, West, Sonny
Del'eo (CZ) and Gary Semics (Hus)
fought for fourth place.
West made his move into fourth on
lap ten, picking off J.ones for third on
the white flag lap, but with no real shot
at second. DeWayne sHpped into fourth
with DeFeo and Bailey rounding out the
top six. Raters who planned ahead and'
got their eN stickies. on, picked up $2.50
