For a fust event, everything 'seemed

CORONA, CAL., Sept. 21, 1972 - The
first riders to go after the 200% purse
were those in the 125 Senior Race. In
the first moto Ray Lopez took a
commanding lead ahead of Dave Rogers
and Gary EldeTs and Lopez took hom
first place money and Dave Rogers
second.
Ron Rieke on a Puch from Redlands
won two firsts and a second for the
overall win in the 125 Intermediate class
ahead of Steve Gannon on'a Penton.
In the 250 Senior Race there was a
good turnout of excellent riders. From
the start of the first moto Rich
Eierstedt took the lead and kept
increasing it over Rex. Staten and Ray
Topham. Staten got a very poor start
and had to work up from seventh place
on the first lap, finally managing to
come up to third. In the second moto of
the 250 Seniors Eierstedt once agam
took a commanding lead. However, he
was chased quite hard by Gaylon
Mosier, his Maico teammate.
In the third moto Eierstedt (an
wire-to-rire with Rex Staten hot on his
heels. Rick was really riding to nigh t and
lbere was no way he was going to let
taten around him. In the final
standings Eierstedt look home the fust
place money wi th Rex second and
Lunde third. .
10 the 500 Senior class we saw a show
of riding abili ty on the part of Ray
Topham on a CZ. At lbe start they went
into the first left tum towards the Jump
and at this position Ray Topham was
running fourth. He passed three riders in
the air going over that first jump and
when he got to the next left hand tum
Topham was in first and kept that
position through the en tire tnoto. Rex
Staten had a bad start, however worked
his was up to second but couldn't catch
Ray.
In the second and third motos
Topham once again ran wire-to-wire.
Rex Staten once again chased Ray in
the second moto, bu t in the third moto
Staten had trouble with his carburetor,
bu t limped in for fourth which put him
in second place overall. Randy Hoff, a
new Senior at Corona Raceway and his
third time out as a Senior, won for the
second wee k in a row lbe third place
money.

CORONA, CAL., Sept. 14, 1972
Once again, Corona had a few surprises
for the rideTs. Not only was the course
super muddy, bu t the start was reversed.
Instead of taking the long way around
the lake and through the infield, the
pack now went into the close tum, over
the jump, and. out the chute into the
hills all tightly bunched together. With
the entire field racing into that first tum
full of mud, it was slip-and-slide at the
start of almost every moto.
Even the flagman was a surprise.
