by jennie Johnson
COSTA MESA, CAL., Sept. 22,1972 The winner of the Costa Mesa Handicap
Main, Bill Manley, is going to be a rider
to keep your eyes on. He will be on top
before we know it. In the Handicap
Main, Manley beat Larry Shaw and Mike
Bast by a fairly safe margin, with Les
Chanky, in new brigh t orange leathers,
Ron Stewart, and Dubb Ferrell trailing
behind.
Steve Bast didn't make it into either
of the Main events, but won both of the
Consolations.
In
the
Handicap
Consolation, Steve Bast and Bill
Firnhaber fought for first place. They
changed positions at least fo.ur times
during the last one and a half laps. When
they came to the finish line, Bast took
it. It was super racing by both of them!
Mike Curoso came up third, fourth to
Ron Taylor, fifth to Don Cullum, with
Bruce Haserot falling.
In the Scratch Consolation, Steve
Bast won it with some ease, but Guy
Waterson was getting pretty close
toward the end. Third and fourth places
went to Bill Manley and Don Cullum,
respectively.
Mike Bast won the Scratch Main
event quite easily. Mike Curoso and
Larry Shaw fought it out for second
with Curoso winning. Fourth place went
to jim Gresham.
Guy Watersdn beat Larry Moon in
the Feature Match Race, with Moon
having bike problems.
Phil Moon won the Division 11 Main
event. Ralph Castor, who captured
second, sure gave Moon a run for his
money. Don Stubbs and Steve Nutter
got third and fourth places in that
order.

Irwindale Speedway----by Ralph
IRWINDALE, CAL., Sept. 28, 1972 Bill Cody has been absent from the
Irwindale speedway oval for three or
four weeks but you would have never
known it watching him race tonight at
the San Gabriel Valley track.
Back in action after a trip to England
for the recent World Speedway Final,
Cody slipped in to both main even ts and
managed to. capture the Handicap
feature after moving past a talen t-loaded •
field .. Cody was bothered by Steve Bast
who shared the 40-yard line with him
but the elder Bast brother wound up
second after five laps of racing. Third
went to Scott Autrey who had set the
early pace. Autrey was in excellent fonn
despite coming off a tiring trip overseas
and a long day of qualifying for the
weekend's Ontario road race. Autrey
grabbed sixth in his junior qualifying
heat.
Mike Bast, Steve Gresham, and Mike
Konle rounded out the Handicap Main
field. The Scratch Main held few
surprises with Mike Bast getting one of
his patented lightning starts and never
looking back. Had he glanced behind
him, he would of seen Cody and Danny
Becker locked in a struggle for second.
