One of these is the solvent in some types of spray paint. If you must personalize your helmet by painting it, use only a paint recommended by the manufacturer. The best idea, however, is to leave it the way you bought it. A flashy paint job may do something for your ego, bu t it doesn't do anything for your helmet or your head. Liquid gasoline will liquify styrofoam almost instan tly, and even gas fumes will do ajob on it. Keep your helmet as far as possible from gasoline, and use reasonable care in bringing it in contact with any chemical. An important point about the liner: styrofoam absorbs the energy of a shock by deforming. I t den ts. It is not, however, a resilient material and won'l bounce back to its original shape after an impact. Once the liner is den ted it has lost forever some of its capacity to absorb an impact.
