After gassing up, the riders headed out Rattlesnake Canyon to the desert floor and then out to Slash X Ranch for gas breakfast. Picking up the riders back at the mountain gas check about II :30 I rode in with them to the finish. Thankfully we didn't have to back up the downhill as they rou ted us around it. Tbose fire roads sure look different during the day. T'tie only complaint I heard about the whole race was that the speeds were too slow down the fire roads but they were set low for safery's sake. There was quite a bit of two way traffic Sunday aftemoon and the Chaparrals did not want anyone splattered on the front of someones camper. A t the finish the riders received not only a neat pin for themselves but one for their pit crew also. All in aU it was a tremendous run and the " "Now do I-look like I'm the kind of guy that would be five minutes late at a checkpoint? There must be some mistake." computed. Can yo~ believe that? Only 4 points lost after riding 220 miles! Dave Ekins, D. Knous and Jay Tullis tied for 6th with 7 poin ts lost. Everyone was asking where Ron Schneiders was and all I could tell them was I heard a TUmor that there was a kidnapping at the Six Day Trials involving an American reporter and 2 Russians on J awas and that a Cycle News-MosC0W edition was due to be printed soon. Cha arrals put in a hell of a lot of work on the course. Smokey and the crew from I RRC was there providing communications and first aid and- did their usual fine job. The Chaparrals had a mini-computer in their trailer handling the scoring which was super neat but it was a little slow. Un officials results have Carl Price on a 175 Penton first losing only 4 points with H.S. Keast second. R. Knapp, K. Kledzik and Fred Hayes are tied for 3rd until the tie breaker is Wm.
