Bay Mare MX' ... , .•. , . , . , .. , . , , .. 'rhe results of by Mark Milford SOMJS, CAL., Sept. 17, 1972 Although Bay Mare has always had the paten tial to become one of Southern California's lOp motocross tracks. it has. for some reason, been going steadily downhill ever since the 1969 Inter-Am was held here. Thus, despite the European layout and good facilities it has been a "sleeping gian t" for years, holding races occasionally but plagued by lousy track prep, poor advertising and a myriad of other petty problems. Yet, the potential was still there. ow, it seems, that possibility is to become a reality. Race promoter Rodger Smith has taken out a lease on Bay Mare and today made ready to initiate the badly needed reforms. All riders were polled on exactly what couse texture, course layou t, tophies. start, and mota lengths they wanted. Indian Dunes MX ...:;..__ by John Gtout VALE -CIA, CAL., Sept. 24, 1972 Matt Bilton of Woodland llills, newly graduated from Junior ranks, sailed a_ Maico to an impressive overall victory in the 250 Expert division during today's bounce and bounder. Fifteen-year-old Bilton, down one fall after dropping his first molo to Can-Am series winner Randy Stubbs of North Hollywood, was finally able to located tap cog in the latter rounds, picking up 800 points with back-to-back triumphs. In what began as a bleak-appearing day for Bilton considering the 'authority with which Bultaco-mounted S tubbs, also a recen t graduate from Novice activity, was able to gain his long-yardage win the first mota - he was stroking along on the steps of Valhalla towards the end of the entire debacle_ Thor, himself, couldn't have tossed zippier thunderbolts_ During his second mota, young Bilton, a "Maico Mauler from Mortenson's cycle shop in the Newhall-Saugus area, rattled to a lap-clocking of 1:48.70. CZ rider Mike Brown, riding amongst the Open Experts. found himself in much the same position as had Bilton. He got scuttled by Ress Benson (Mai) in the divisions first heat, but Brown, a Torrance-area pilot, took complete command in the last motos recording easy victories. In l25 Expert action - a constant back-and-forther during the entire day of racing - Craig Maisack (Bul), Randy SCOtt (Yam) and R.D. Williams (Pen) split wins in the three, seven-lap heats before Maisack left the old Reservation with a genuine squeaker of an overall triumph. One of the day's most professional programs was presen ted by a large field of Powder Puffers. For the first time and why not? - they employed a 'ovice and Amateur ranking system. Although run as a single group, the two classes were scored separalely; prossibly creating a more equitable distribution of the trophies. Trudy Stubbs (Am) and Vicki Hendrix (Nov). were the two overall winners. John J ugenheimer, astride a rocket-like Yamaha, collected mota fmishes of 2-1-2 to defeat a 32-rider crew of 100 Juniors. Runners-up included Andy Jannings (Hod), Dawson Grumsley (Yam), Terry Ash (Hon) and Hodaka moun ted Jerry Lear. In clashes among the 12.5 Junior groupings - a clan which is overflowing with Expert-rider potential - Stuart Lilly (Bul) and Rob Gorham, who again scored a three-far-three grand slam on his Monark, were the two overall winners in their respective divisions. Among riders who got close to the front-running pair, were Paul Cloward (Pen), Russ McAfee (BuI), Pat Reilly (Yam) and Ron Byarr (Bul). Both Rick _Maricle (CZ) and Ron Bates (CZ) were able to nail a grand slam victory in their particular 250 Junior class. Swiftest of the two though not by much - was "Dr." Maricle, who garnered a one-lap clocking in one of his matos, closely approximating those turned in by Experts. Among runners-up 10 the 250 victors were: Dennis Allman (Bul), John Pfeiffer (Yam), Bob Alderman (Mai), Terry Biner (Mai), Gerardo Hernandez (CZ) and Gary Brown (CZ). In Open Junior warfare, Bob CuIlinan (CZl. Greg Osborne (CZ) and Randy Schmitz, also on a CZ hauler. had an all-day donnybrook before Bob pulled the whole thing out of the fire during his final malO win. thi~ query will be incorporated for next race. Though the '01 crystal ball is sending out good vibes, today's racing was little different than before: dust and whoop-de-doos were prevalen t. The 250's stormed onto the scene, in what looked like a CZ field day, led by Jim Byrd (CZ) and Mike Pace, also Communist mounted. Jim won the first round, but a curious thing happened in the second mota. Jim would slow down and let Mike by, whereupon they would wave at each oth~r in passing, and then Byrd would ride furiously to catch him again. This occurred lap after lap with Mike being ahead at the checkers. They both 'went into the last mota with a 1-2 record and Byrd, apparently through with this cat-and-mouse, stretched it out again, winning overall. The 125 Juniors rivaled the 250 show, as after Larry Burgess's first mota runaway, his DKW was fiercely pursued by Larry Robertson (Bul), Larry Hentschel (Yam), and Charles Angell (Ren). Burgess still won, though as usual. The 500 class, too, was almost as exciting as watching a donut getting soggy. Tom Hainley (CZ) ran away and hid from his competitors, as Jerry Harris (S uz) pogo-sticked in to second. Bay Mare also will, in the future, include an Intermediate class in the day's schedule and many of this track's regular winners are to be bumped up (Hot Bananas), giving all us other Juniors a shot at some of the gold.
