I realize you can't have everything. There is one thing I would like to ask, how do you set so many reports on so many races? J.W.STOBER Rio Linda Academy Hearldsburg. CaJif. Two to three tests and riding impressions per issue isn't enough? I was afraid we had too many. Most race reports come in from our valued eN correspondents, of which we really don't have enough ... Ed. ATTENTJON AMA CHARTERED CLUBS 0-36 You mayor may not be aware of District 36 being in the process of developing changes in form of new rules and the total incorporation of the District in 1973. 1 know that there are many of the District 36 clubs that have not received work of these changes in incorporation. I would like to recommend that you get in contact with the District commissioner or myself in the very near future to obtain copies of proposed changes. The next District Sports Committee meeting is slated for October 9th at the Holiday Inn in Pleasanton, Calif. It is very important that a representative of your club be there. CASH FUND I am writing in behaJf of Mike Cash. Mike is thirty years old and has been a bike enthusiast since he was 10. He had previously set a speed record at a drag strip in Long Beach. As you stated 1lt your paper of Sept. 12, Mike flipped his - 125cc Yamaha Streamlinerat Bonneville SaJt FIats on Aug. 22 while trying for a land speed record. Since that time he has been unconscious in a Salt Lake City hospital. The doctors have warned that Mike may remain unconscious for months. It will be at least a year before he can return to work. All Mike's friends in the Carlsbad, Calif. area and SaJt Lake City have been helping his wife, Shirley. all they can. Although Mike has insurance which will cover about 70 percent of his medical bills, they need money for all the other mounting bills and living expenses for his w·ife and three little girls. We want to make an appeaJ in your paper to all bike enthusiasts for help for Mike. Any donation can be used_ Anyone who would like to send a donation can do so by sending it to the Mike Cash Fund, P.O. Box 1146;Vista, California 92008. KEN SNOW THE OTHER SIDE In reply to the article in Cycle News West, Sept. 12. 1972, titled "Caveat Emptor Motociclismus" WhIch dealt with the "Motorcycle Shop Parts Man Know-It-AU" we must remonstrate. Have you ever heard the otber side of this story? John Ulrich is- an unusual, customer. TypicaJly; "I need a frammis for my Honda 90." Which Honda 90 is this individual referring to? S90, SL90, CL90, CT200, CA200, CM91, CT90, CT90KI, CT90K2, CT90K3. and CT90K4 are just some of the 90cc machines that Honda has manufactured_ If the owner doesn't know his own machine then are parts hummers supposed to be clairvoyant? OccasionaJly the following question is posed to us. "Got any whatchamajiggers for a 1970 Honda?" We know what is coming but reply patiently, "Whal model?" He replies with a self-satisfied smile. "1970". God Almighty. the year is not the model!! Then there's aJways the customer who has a 125 Cemoto or a 175 Sherpa T. The corker is the customer who came in and informed us that he had a 250 "racing" Cemoto Sherpa. We realize that the average rider can't be expected to refer to the parts that he needs with the correct terminology but. when someone doesn't know the difference between a nut and a bolt then we parts hummers tend to become disillusioned and we may be seen tearing our hair-out and muttering in the aisles. If you need to buy parts for your bike the least that you can do for your parts man is to know what model you possess along with your frame and engine numbers aJ:ld then be patient and cooperative. Otherwise, we may give you the parts book and let your figure it out for yourself. R. GERHARDT BENSBERG MARK L. GAUSS PATRfCIA A_ C1SSNA Parts Hummers for "Dan's Cycles" Colorado Springs. Col. THE LAND USE BUSINESS We have under" consideration the matter of use fees for all types of special uses of the public lands. Examples of these .Land uses are: survival, organized tOUTS,' backpacking, ORV events, river runners, and field camps. It has long been the policy of the Federal Government that a reasonable charge should be made to each ideo tifiable recipien t for a measurab Ie unit or arooun t of governmen t service or property from which he derives a special benefi t. There are several laws which reinforce this policy, and many use fees, for other than off-road vehicle events. are being charged at this time_ In a sense .many uses of desert lands are new and h ave increased by staggering proportions since World War II. Many problems have attended this increased use of the public lands. They .include. but are not limited to, destruction of resources, conflicts between the various users, ..pollution, and damage to public facilities from both vandalism and overuse_ The cost to the government for managing these uses has also increas.ed. Use fees can help offset the costs of developing, managing. and rehabilitating tl,e public lands where environmental vaJues have been adversely affected. , We appreciate receiving your comments. HARRISON LOESCH Assistant Secretary of the Interior Washington. D.C. UP THE SHORT CIRCUIT! In a recent issue of Cycle News, writer Bob Read quotes Kel Carruthers as saying he didn't care for Laguna Seca as a road racing circuit. Read says he agreed with Carruthers. First, one has to question Read's judgment when he refers to Carruthers as "the most experienced (motorcycle) road racer in competirion in America." I-las Read ever compared Carruthers' sad win record with that of either Yvon DuHamel or Cal Rayborn? I t's obvious why Carruthers didn't like 'Laguna. In spite of getting there a week early to get a big jump on everyone else ire practice, he finished a miserable fifth in the 1:!5-mlie race, a full lap behind winner Rayborn. One suspects he would have been wild about the circuit if he'd won. ~ As for Carruthers' remark putting down any road racing cireui t th at includes a low gear tum - well, it's so shortsighted and ridiculous that it almost doesn't deserve commen l. Suffice it to say. roads in general contain low gear turns (even stop signs). The classic Isle of Man circuit has low gear turns_ And what's wrong with low gear tums that tax brakes, adhesion, handling, and most importantly. acceleration. That's what road racing is all about - after all. it's not speedway racing, is it? MARSHAL GLOSS Daly City. Calif. , COMMENTARY After reading recent issues. I am moved to make some comments: Maureen Lee mentioned going to Lake Tahoe to fill her tires, to keep them from being eroded from within by So-Cal smog. Save the trip! Have somebody put on a face Filtron and blow the tube up! This will work for motocross really well. 'Course, for desert, where you need morc pressure, maybe you could get a real windbag, like some freelancing Enduro reporter. .. or maybe one of your "political anaJyts". About your CZ test: this here two year CZ rider says if those buzzards would import the 01' Ceske Zavodny without fork seals. four pound steel fenders. seven pound iron gas tank. baling wire spokes, that nifty European plastic in the airbox. those hokey footpegs (even the newest folders). the junk rear ·shocks and 110 Ib spring. the slick paper air filter. and. of course. that wonderous device, the Jikov carburetor, think how many hours of joy the normaJ idiot' would be robbed in breaking and replacing the above items. This guy Byron Black. reputedly jumping canals in Venice for nickels; is this the same Byron Black, English professor at Fresno State and ~awasaki road racer, who mysteriously disappeared after a) SaJting and peppering his draft card at a Fresno State rally and then eating it? b) Being charged with high (high?) treason for having done this act against mother and country? Byron Black, where are you when we need you? Motorcycling ain't the same without you, boy. JAMIE L1NXWlLER Escondido, CaJif. Gosh, we ha.rdly know what to say. Except that the smogfree air tip came from Alice Rhea, and our managing editor isn't just any normal idiot and Byron Black used ketchup on his draft card ... Ed. YOU GOTTA PAY WHAT YOU SAY Enclosed is an ad for racing at Osteen Park, Sept. 2 & 16. Observe a $500 purse guarantee. We and several others are irate because they paid according to entry fees only! We have raced for that many a time and would have been there to race for same, butit should be stated as such! A whole group of us feel the same way and you'll likely hear from more people_ We own the bikes, put on the show, not mentioning what you know is the cost of running and \Daintaining the machinery. P_S. We also understand that if they lost money on other 500 purses. notices should have been sen t out changing their ad.
