HATELEY, WHITE ARE FASTEST STEEPLECHASERS Heat race action as Scott (64) and Dorsch (22) lead Palmgren (38), Rayborn (141, Hately (981, and Bostrom. . Spills, spills, and more spills highlighted the return of the IT riders 'to the Ascot course the night before the Half-mile National_ Hardly a race went by without either the red nag stopping the even t or one or two riders falling somewhere on the track_ The lack of at least once a month IT racing is beginning to show. Junior Tom White out-time trailed all 'the Experts, hut then John Hateley put everything together halfway through the Expert final to come from a distant fifth place to overtake the leaders and go on for the win, grabbing the lead on lap twelve. Eddie Wirth fell off on the first lap, leading the even l. Then Terry Dorsch and Mike staged a two rider battle with Haney getting by on the seventh lap. Dorsch dropped ou t late in the even t, runniog in third place. All three of the Main events had to be stopped due to crashes on the first lap. In the Expert event it was Dorsch, Wirth and Dave Hansen. All three got back in but Wirth pulled a repeat. In the Junior final Rorton held White until lap seven and then White zipped by to go on for the win_ Earlier in the night, Washington's Steve Baker started a five rider chain reaction spill when he tried to put a wheel under Scott Brelsford. Baker high-sided and his machine served as a ramp for Rick Newby who sailed full throttle through the air and into the fence. Three other riders also wen t down bu amazingly none were hospitalized_ Brelsford went on to win the heat and come back to run a third place in the final behind White and Horton. A crash opened the Novice final with Dan White, M.ike Myers and Oregon's Walt Mundt trying for the metal baIL Again all three walked aWay with Gennai taking the lead on the re-start. The hard charging Rick Hocking stayed close and took the lead on lap two. Gennai, switching from Yamaha to Bultaco for this one, held second until the late 1aps when he slowed and dropped to eigh th. Motocrosser Bob Hosford, won the semi and then came from the back row to pick off rider after rider to take second but he had to hold ·off Pat Hennen the last five laps to show his best finish to date in an AMA pro event. Hank Scott was fourth with Mundt getting back up and in for fifth. Haney and Paul Bostrom were the two f.xpert heat race winners. Don Dudek took the semi win. Sonny Burres en tered and ran second in the semi before running back in the pack in the fmal and dropping out midway in the race.
