.' OH COME ON ! BROOKS DIDN'T WIN AGAIN? -but he did, overall. ~ " o ~ w Z W ..J U > U . Tom Poteet IBul) grabbed the lead and kept it on. Tom Brooks finally got past him but Tom was stililirst 250 Expert (second o""rall) in one of his finest rides in recent memory. This is his fourth first overall on that 'by Alice Rhea bike. Tom has been fast for a long time CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL., Sept. 24, but has had a lot of trouble with 1972 - "Well, it just ain't right," machinery. Everybody elLpected him to pouted the unhappy Shamrock. "That do well with a bike that would stay first loop was big bike country." together under him, but not this well. uYe"ah, it was," agreed his partner, At the end of 175 miles Brooks had "but we forgot to tell Tom Brooks." opened up a full four minute lead. At the smoke bomb, everybody Pretty speedy for a 125. debated who number 17 was and when 8'ack in second place, Tom Poteet it was finally decided that that number (Bul) began battling for first 250 Expert belongs to Dick Brecker and I knew he with the very fast Jim Fishback (CZ) wasn't there. I finally realized that it Jim grabbed the lead from Poteet was actually number 17x, Tom Poteet several times only to have Tom repass on his Bultaco. It has just been so long him. The fmal pass went to Poteet, since Tom led a race th at nobody earning first 250 Expert for him, and expected him. Tom managed to hang putting Fishback in third overall and onto his lead for about ten miles and second 250 Expert. Poteet was later then .....That Brooks kid just went by seen with his righ t foot elevated, me," Tom said. "1 kept up with him for keeping pressure off a possible broken a long time but then it got tight and he foot. just started pulling away." Jack Knebel (CZ) fel t pretty good at Tom Brooks' DKW must putting out- the finish line today. His fourth overall about 40 H.P. to 11:0 as fast as it does. and first Open Ex ert made his shoulder CRASH AND BURN LTD. OK, Tom. Now you've had your picture in Cycle NelNS. You can quit embarrassing everybody and stop winning overall on that DKW. . feel much better. Jack went so far as to say it was the funnest, best·marked course he had ever ridden. Somebody also forgot to tell Mitch Mayes that the course was laid out for big bikes. His little Baja screamed across the fmish line fifth overall and first Expert Trailbike. From the looks of things, Jack Knebel was 'the one who was confused. What was he doing on that big 400 CZ in the middle of a' bunch of bikes ranging from 100 to 250ccs? For right behind Mitch, came Ken Buckspan on one of those 175 Bultacos for second in his class and Steve Holladay on a 250 Yamaha. The word abou t the course did get out to the Amateurs and the first two in were Open class. Dick Harris had a good ride for a change, taking first and Todd Cornish (Hus) also finally got it 'all together for a second. Hope you two enjoyed your last Amateur ride. Tom Center (belter known as Dirty Old Man) was at the finish line and said that is it for you two. Third Amateur was Greg Seda (Bul) who was also first 250 Amateur. Mounted on a decrepit old 125 DKW with a genuine springer front end, a bike that refuses to finish more than every other race, Dean Modesett swept the Novice field today. The second Novice was Henry Wesselman, which is odd, as that is the Open Novice win. But wait, it gets odder. Third Novice was Boe Teasdale winning the Trail Novice go and next was R. Trusty for the 250 Novice win. Lined up real nice, there, fellas. Jan Ditson (Ric) came out of retirement and finished' first girl today. Comments on the course marking ranged from the best ever seel'f to the worst ever !;lot seen.
