Shamrocks stuck their tongue in their cheek and said we were going to California City, and a lot of us did. Well, Saturday night was a pretty night for a drive but those who were in a hurry could have buzzed righ t up Highway 395 another 20 miles, make a left tum and been in Shamrock's camp. We were actually 20 miles north of Four Comers but on the left side of the road for a change. The territory was almost virgin except for the parts where the miners got to her first and gouged uppabuncha holes and built nasty little hills all over the place. One hole was about 36" across and must have gone all the way to China. I was afraid to get close enough to see if it really had a bottom. We heard that one of the Checkers found one shaft the hard way, but didn't get any info on just how hard he found it. Hope it wasn't too serious. To the Shamrocks' credit, they did a good job of marking shafts in the area, including many which were not on the' course. They also warned mothers to watch their children. For all the grumbling from riders who couldn't see the course markings in the dust, there were a lot of happy grins at the finish line. It was just a perfect day to ride hard, with weather remaining almost cold. One thing, Shamrocks ...who has the fmisher pins?
