RACE Junior Motocross The Honda Racing Team was all wet (and muddy) in night Junior MX at Corona. Moosh. by Christopher Ostlind CORONA, CAL., Sept. 22,1972 - Last Friday's night's R.A.C.E. all Junior motocross was highligh ted by terrific track conditions and a domination of the 250 classes by Yamaha and Suzuki. 250 Juniors Dan Crawford, John Rogers and George Smith really got it on as they tore up the track like young Joel Robert's on their production Suzukis. The overall win went to Crawford as he rode to some very convincing wins on his speedy Suzuki. He was follcowed by Rogers and then Smith. The 250 Beginners Division II was a Yamaha sweep as Gary McNeal snagged ,first overall away from Don Ross and Terry Donnelly. Division I of the 250 Beginners had a Yamaha ridden by Micky Rollins first overall, a Suzuki was third with Joe Schoney. at the con trois and one lone CZ ridden by Mike Johnson was second. The preparation of the Corona Raceway Motocross track was really first rate. The soil had just the right amount of moisture in it to insure good traction while nOLbeing slick at muddy. Since it was Junior nigh t, the big uphill loop was not used, and that probably put quite a few riders in a more relaxed frame of mind. The old adage .that what goes up must come down holds true for Corona and mat Expert downhill is a Mutha' Bear. Take advantage of the nice weather and go see how Corona Raceway and R.A.C.E. put together a motocross. USMRC Junior Motocross by V. Lanza EL TORO, CAL., Sept. 20, 1972 Tonight marked the last Wednesday night motocross racing at EI Toro until . next year, but the Juniors are invited out to ride EI Toro Friday nights. John Gless took advantage of the last Wednesday night to show the Junior Schoolboys that he was tops as he took me class with a near sweep. Greg Bartock finished up second and Dunae Mapes third. Jed Mendez took an uncontested win in the Intermediate division while Brad Dutoit found the Experts little trouble. Jim Dean showed the 100 Juniors how it's done as he sliced right mrough that class. Jim Curland and Bobby Jones were left to pick up the remaining trophies for second and third. Sweeps seemed to be the order of the nigh t as Bob Hoover picked up the 125 Junior with three wins. Phil Nyland put on a good show for the second and Billy Johnson got the mird. The biggest class of the nigh t was the 250 Junior and mey really came out in force. Pete Schabasgary extended the sweeps of the nigh t, as he rode over the other 250 Juniors in division I to win it all. Ron Kepner and Richard Scuito followed in order for the second and third place. The 250 Junior II was another sweep, as Jim Snyder grabbed top honors, while Gary Mickles took second with a trio of second finishes. The 500 Juniors rounded out the night's racing program and Bob Byars took the first honors, while Jeff Koble got the second. It looked like Koble had it until the last moto when he DNF'ed. -David Boydstun and Dan Shapard battled it out in the Intermediate! Expert class, with Boydstun capturing' the win. With Wednesday night racing finished for this year, we hope to see you again next year. FREE MOUNTING WITH TIRE PURCHASE InYANNUYS CYCLE CARE PRODUCTS open 7 days MonfThurs. 9·9 Fri. till 6. Not so with AMC's Old Timers who tend to go very fast even for their advanced age (at least 35 years old). Take the winner of that class, Earl Reineohl (Mai), or the man who got a third last week and a second this week, Rick Watson, (Mai) they dueled for three motos, exchanging the lead several times. For being Old Timers, they went just as fast as the younger folks in the other classes. I I' you remember last week, AMC had a cliffhanger in the shape of 100 Beginners Gary Pringle (Hod) and Chris Provost (Ric). They had each gOllen a first and a second and were tied in points going into the third moto. Then engine trouble on the line put Provost out of the running and Pringle first overall. Well, it looked as if today was going to be an instant replay of last week with these two going at it again. The first moto saw Pringle on top and Provost a close second. Then came a change of plot and Pringle rode his Hodaka to two more wins with Provost always just behind for a sweep of both first and second spots. Today was also the third race of the Yamaha Mini cycle Serie.s. Another replay of last week was the two moto duel for under-eleven Jeff Ward and over-eleven Brad Dutoit. They were nearly wheel·to·wheel in the first two motos, Dutoit ahead and Ward jl,lst behind. Then, in the last moLO. a new face was at the front. He was under,.leven, Brad Roberts, whose only challenger .was Dutoit. After two laps, Outoit finally got around him but for his fine bit of riding, Roberts gOt a second in his class. Dutait got a first in the over·eleven, and Ward got first in the under-eleven class. Over·eleven second went to Jeff Wilson. (Hondas all). In the past few weeks, several people have gotten hurt on the dusty downhill of the start hill but, according to AMC officials, a change is coming soon which .should cut down the fatality rate a bunch. All the current AMC motocross going on now is under the ti tied of the Smuggler Series and the first prize is (What a surprise!) a Smuggkr trailer. What that trailer? Come to Saddleback next Saturday and ride the first of the last ten Series races.
