CORPUS CHRlSTI, TEX., Sept. 17"
1972 - Mini bikes ran heats to qualify
for the finals just like the bigger bikes.
The little guys really turned it on for a
couple of good heats and a superb final.
First place in the finals went to Dwyer
Cnmmings. Dwyer was follwed by
another Honda rider, Derek llierholzer.
Corpus Christi riders sewed up all
three spots in the 100 finals. These
riders were Rick Davis (Kaw) first,
Richard Morris (Suz) second, and James
Young (Kaw) third.
The top three places in the 125 class
were
aU riding Bultacos. George
"Lizard" Larzelere was first, Billy Bryan
took second, and "'Fast" Robert
Vaughn placed third.
Maxine Shields and Ronny Stephens
tangled up in the first heat of the 200
class. Maxine and her bike ended up on
top of Ronny and his bike. Nothing
seemed to be hurt except their pride.
This was quite a crowd-pleaser, but it
eliminated two good riders from the
final. The winners of this eve.n were all
riders from San Antonio. Hal Stockton
(Bul) won. Second place rider was
Richard Brown (Bul), and still another
Bul-rider,Jerry Powell, took third.
Bodie Craig (Bul), from Corpus
Christi, won the 250 class, even though
he was handicapped by a broken foot.
Montesa mounted Rbett Wilder came
storming in right behind Bodie for
second.
"Doc" Harr, rode his big BSA to
victory in the open class. One of the
"Grand-Old-Men-of-Racing",
Larry
Beal, took second on his 305 I-Ionda.
Bodie Craig was the winner of the ~
trophy dash and the reclplant of a klsa
from the pretty tropby girl, Caroline
Risser.
The promoters extend an open
invitation to attend the next race,
scheduled for October 15th.
to Las Vegas but not to racing. The only
man to beat him was Nick Tanner and
only once ou t of tb ree heats in the 250
Amateur class.
The only super-star who did show. up
was Bobby Davidson, last year's winner
of the Mint 400, 125cc class. But a
certain Sergio Elisondo showed some
class by winning the 12'5 Expert races
handily. And young Daryl Mason got it
together in the Amateur' class to beat
out that fast plumber, John Damico,
both riding new Pen tons. The 100
Am-Ex. had a full day of racing with the
outcome not being cer, tain until the
final flag. With top riders like Lybarger,
Stadtlander, and Cannon all leading at
Bronze with Pat being on the off-brand
