In case you're not filled in on the story" Perris, a track responsible for many of our top name pro racers now on the circuit, got burned out by an arsonist a few months back. No insurance, either. So Jim 'Hunter, with me bringing up the drag, decided a Burton's Night was in ordcr to put some money back in to the track we all raced on. We've been beating the bushes for old-timers, men who made and some of wbom still are, making, their names in motorcycling. People listed on the old District perpetual trophies, and even those who didn't make that high a grade but were still a force to be reckoned with, have been contacted. Then there's a gang of people who just love to ride Perris and they'll be there,if only to lend support to the evening and everybody pays.tluough the gate. The response has been so great that I guess Jimbo and I will have to go through the list and weed a few riders out who want to ride when we have the complete list at the track, just to make sure that some of 'you currently competing don't make it too tough on the old-timers! We'll maybe throw you in a "Hooligan" of your own. So far, we have names like Riley, Spargur, Goldsmith, Guy Louis, "Feets", S tevc: Hurd, Malcolm Smith, Dick Hammer, Eddie Mulder, Skip Van.Leeuwen, Terry Dorsch, Billy Holcomb if he can get away from his job in Arizona, Moxley, Ballard, Timmons, Kelly, the gang from Red Line Frames, Ken Maeley, Nick Nicholson, 'Rich Thorwaldson, Charlie Hockie...egad! The list goes on and on. If either Jim or I haven't grabbed you yet and asked you. to come, come anyway, we need your support. More important, the Burtons need your support. If you want to just come and spectate, please do, The more the merrier. Y au 'il see so much back slapping and hear so much bench racing your head will spin. So, come September 30th, be at Perris in the cool of the evening. If you ain't, and don't have a good excuse, you ain't got no class. So, Grace and Jerry, keep the dawgs tied up and the giltes open, we're coming "home". Got a nice freebie in the mail the other day, "'The Complete Book of Motocross" written by Jim Davis and Bob Jackson and published by the Bagnall Publishing Company. It's loaded with photographs and explains in steps, what it takes to become a motocross racer, from the day you decide you wan t to take up the sport un til you can bounce around the boonies with the best of 'em. It will be especially helpful to a chap who wants to start racing but doesn't have bike racing buddies to get him started in the right direction, and how many times we've seen lost souls show up at sign-up, wanting to ride without even the sligh test notion they have to have a license .• A t the District level, with the goings-on between the BLM and the use of the desert for racing, and the land use fees, we've got a little "scoop". There's a real good possibility that the fee may be illegal. If it is, and it's been charged, I wonder how certain people in high California politics are going to explain it to people in even higher politics? One more thing about the Burtons' Night, since the whole membership of the old California Gophers is going to turn up, I'd almost like to bet that it will be one of them who'll win the Old-Timers race. But then on second though t, there are some other Old-Timers who weren't Gophers and who can still go like hell. Hunter has even got Willie Wilson on his list, number one in 1954 when some of you jelly beans didn't know what a motorcycle was. Bruce Jackson was second that year and Bud Ekins third. Oh boy, roll on, September 30th! Ascot AMA ---National Now September 24; Taped for ABC-TV general manager after years as its motorcycle race organizer, announced Tuesday that the American Broadcasting Company would tape the AMA National for a subsequent showing on its "Wide World of Sports" program.
