395 T.T. and Half-mile The fasT Experts at 395 Cycle Park search for the fast groove during their five practice laps. Corona TT & H a l f - M i l e - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., Sept. 13, 1972 - For ont:e the girls had enough for a class of their own and a young lady by the name of Randy Miller who sports shocking pink leathers, took the win with Chelle Blythe second and Debi Wright thrid. Debbi J ones who is always a competitor was forced out with mechanical problems and it was a joy to see Eulene Long giving the Corona course a try. It's been a long time since this reporter has seen her compete and I sure hope to see her and lot more of the fairer sex on hand in the future. Kip Johnston earned his graduation papers as he rode a grand slam, three moto win. Joe Horton and Robert Milner had a closer duel but Bob blew it in the last moto and Joe picked up the second. Steve Lyons took the win in the 100 Novice II Short Track and one more win for him will have him riding with the Amateurs. Troy Fisher and Vince Mead went round and round again in the 100-125 Amateur-Expert Short Track and each of them made some mistakes but it was Troy who managed to correct his enough to collect the gold. Vince was second and Doug Westly rounded out the field with a third. Charles Soderstrom continues to be Jim Wright's waterloo in the 175-200 Short Track combined. Jim continl.\es to run with Charles, getting closer every week but he still doesn't have the poise. Hal Cheetwood was third. Jim did fare much better in the 250 Amateur I Short Track as he took on all comers including a very strong challenge from second place Jerry Creer. John Lowe picked up the third. Tad Willis took the win in the 250 Amateur II Perris T T - - by Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., Sept. 9, 1972 - Kirk Redding, paid a long overdue visit to Perris but looked quite at home as he won the Expert moto. Paul ~ambert another long time no see competitor was second and Cary Bevans third. Four passes of 250cc Novices were on hand with winning performances turned in by Dan McWhorter, Craig Saindon, Jim Wood and Mike Hansen. The up for grabs race of the night was the 100cc Amateur·Expert go. The line up had Bobby Sanders, Rob Morrison, Wayne Whisenant and Marc Jonesjust to mention a few. After a mix up in the start of the first race it got on its way b~t Wayne was left behind in the pits. Rob Morrison got off to a flying start, screamed through the sweeper, came out on top, and stayed there. Race two was almost a repeat but tbis time the script changed and Rob went down putting Bobby on top. Rob finished, but far back. It was Rob's ballgame in the third heat but he didn't have enough points to catch Bobby and had to settle for second. Marc Jones was a very close th ird. Sanders didn't fare as well in the 250cc Expert go where Doug Mason showed everybody how it's done. The only thing wrong is that no one could get close enough to benefit from the education. Jeff Coleman had a good tight race with Bobby and came Ollt the victor. Bobby was third. Mark Reichert won the 250cc Amateur. Rex Hailey is a young lJIaJf 0'1 ,h,js, topping Bob Craves and Cary White. Jamey Blunt caught fire after a slow . start in the 250 Expert Short Track and put on a good show winning die class over J ay Lewis and Randy Bailey. I t was Honda and BSA that ruled the Novice Moto Short Track. Jim Creger, took the first with Sandy Robertson second. Third place Kent Wilson had second in his back pocket but blew it in the final moto with a fifth that put him out of the money .• S andy Armstrong won the Amateur·Expert Short Track fooking far out as he b.acked that big Triumph into the turns getting all kinds of full lock sHdes. Chris Smith was second and Rick Marquis third. Armstrong looked like he might go home with two first place trophies but one miscaluJation in the final Big Bike Half Mile did it to him. By laying it over a wee bit too much he lost it and didn't rmish. The win went to Jay Hunter on a Norton who brings a very good cheering section with him and Chris Smith nailed down second. Sandy had enough for third. Ricky Milner was on hand doing' what he does best at Corona and that is win the 250 Expert Half Mile on his Kawasaki. Second was another Kawasaki mounted rider in the person of Jeff Coleman who continues to be ttle challenger but has yet to catch his hometown rival. Jay Lewis was third. Tad Willis picked up his second trophy of the evening as he won the 250 Amateur II Half Mile. Don Crigsby and Cary White took Divisions I and III. The only accident of the evening was that of a pit racer who learned the hard way that the only racing that pays is . that which takes place on the track. _ way up and with every ·ride he gains more poise. Evidence of this was his win in the 125cc Amateur.Expert. Riding in a combined class with 175·200cc Amateur·Experts but' being scored separately, he held on to his cool and gave the big boys a run for their money. Jim Watson and Brian King were second and third. The 175-200cc Amateur-Expert winner was Randy Smith with Tom Avoian and Scott Flin t, second and third. The Big Bike Amateurs did some strange things and using most of the track was one of them. Mike DuBont. trying out his new Kawasaki, looked good while he ran. Jim Hendry-held off hard charging Steve Robb and Jack McCafferty and those two really know how to put the pressure on. Bill Klaers, Bob Herrick and Fred Paxton won the three Novice moto classes. Steve Lyons is getting close to an Amateur rating as he racked up another win in the 100cc l'\ovice r. Robert Murray who already has an Amateur rating at Corona was second and John Karns was third. Jay Wagner and Randy Hayes won Divisions two and th ree. Vern Maxwell, Wiley Miller and Bob Cole each took home trophies for wins in the 125cc Novice Divisions. The Old Timers race scheduled for September 30 is shaping up and the Burtons are not only limiting the entires before race day, they are going to h ve mini-bike and cycle racing that evening in order to give more time for the coJorful. figu~s that willlJe:. on han~l., I " by 1mogene Rees (BSA) got his very flrst ever second in ADELA 'TO, CAL., Sept. 16, 1972 The mini-bikes got the show on the road the F1alf-mile.
