Hanford Scrambles - - - - - ... by John Crawford HANFORD, CAL., Sept. 8,1972 - The Kings County Motorcycle Club's penultimate scrambles of the year was, as all the I preceeding events, a beautifully run and prepared for race. The little guys led things off with the 55 Novice Main and Mike Garrison took command righ t off the starting line and never looked back. Mike Leming, the only expert in the 55 Junior-Expert had things under control as he exited the first turn. Jeff Bell was second, ahead of Ricky Pearce until the last tum of lap one, when Pearce picked up the drive and moved past. At the start of the 70 Novice Mike Powell and Greg Powell held a solid first and second ahead of Todd Parker_ Exiting the last tum of lap three, Parker found an opening under Greg Powell ana sljpped through for second. Gino Galli moved righ t in to the lead of the 1.00 Novice, pursued by Bruce Sisk and Randy Myers. However, in the first tum of lap two, Sisk slipped through into the lead and on the third lap Myers was passed by Rick Meumann. David Sharp led a parade in the 100 Junior. Sharp was followed at the finish by John Hollis and Doug Garrison. Jim Conway lept right into the lead of the 125 Novice and was never headed. Jim was aided immeasurably by a large-type pile up in the last tum of lap one that put Ron Henson and Mike Allen in the place and show positions. Scott Galloway got a tremendous jump on the.125 Junior field, then just a bit down the track developed mechanical problems and retired from the action. This put Phil Mascorro into the lead, ahead of Spencer Gilbert and Mark Welter. In the last tum of lap three, Darren Schmidlkofer slipped out high and got a drive around Welter to move into third. . Rick Delgado got an ideal start ahead of Don Andreatta in the 125 Expert. Exiting the first tum, Jack Martin drove under Andreatta to grab second, then entering the first tum of lap three Andreatta slipped in under Martin to return to second. Exiting the last tum of lap three Eric Gifford moved by for third at the flag. Gary Miner and Bob McDanjel were elbow to elbow off the start of the 200 Novice. Through the first tum Miner, with the inside edge, pulled out a light margin with Randy Kincade holding third. Moving out of the last tum of lap three, Miner slipped out just a bit high and McDaniel was righ t there to take over the lead to the checker. Dave Baker charged off the line of the 200 Junior pursued by Tim Phillips and Paul Cates. At the finish, the order was still Baker, Phillips and Cates. Harry Clumplin got a great hole shot on the field of the 250 Novice-Division 1 and once in the lead, proceeded to stretch it out. After a bit of a shuffle in tum two and a fallen rider in the right-hander, David Belden had settled into second and Tony Weins third. go Q. N .... Spencer FReMONT, CAL., Sept. 6, 1972 Fremont sensation Rick Hocking made it four·for·four in the J 0 short track series with yet another migh ty win in the 250cc feature Main event, that saw his only opposition come from 'pat Hennen. The outcome for the event was in little doubt after the fourth lap when Hocking took command with a mighty horsepower pass on the Sonny Kenyon tuned Bultaco, with Mike Renslow on the Champion Race Frame team pulling in a third. Some changes for 'the Experts made the show a little more interesting, as a semi was added. Pat McCaul beat out Steve Foster for the honor of not being the last man to make the main. In the pack for the rnigh ty black plate poin ts, Butch Davidson started out one up on rival Alex Jorgensen and then began to work his Zakarian Bultaco forward. On the sixth lap entering the first comer trouble arose when Ed Rosman caught his foot in a tire marking the inside of the course. In the process of trying to get under control, he centerpunched Davidson letting J orgy get by and losing a couple of valuable points to the second place runner. C"':11O Tulare Scrambles - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by John Crawford TULARE, CAL., Sept. 9, 1972.: The action was hot and heavy at the Tulare Fairgrounds tonight as the Porterville Spinners M/C staged their next to last scrambles race here. Over three hundred eager racers were present, including several sidecar racers from the Side-Hack Association. Ron Tobey charged right into the lead of the 250 Expert ahead of Jack Jones and Bruce Baesemann. and the order stayed right there as the red flag came out on the third lap due to Mike Keener gettin~ off heavily in the last tum. Torn Shumard got a great hole shot on the field of 500 Novices, ahead of Dave Pereira and Jess Rodriquez. Rodriquez went to earth to pu t Allen Ellebrach t in to third. Then in the last tum, laping a slower rider, Shumard got boxed in_ and Pereira moved by for the win over Shumard and Ellebrachl. Steve Gray won the drag race in the 500 Junior ahead of Dave Jones and Dennis McEvoy imd through the gate into the infield, had a sligh t difficulty and Jones was around for the lead. Exiting the last turn of lap two Bill Royer moved into third. In the second turn of lap three, Gray wen t to the outside to move back into the lead. Jack Martin had things all his way in the 500 Expert, although Harvey Bakker and Jeff Johnson battled it out for second with Johnson getting the nod. Brian Enlow led in to the first turn of the Open Nov~ces ahead of Ray Evans and !-.1erritt l\1oore. Evans got the drive over the jump and moved around Enlow but then Enlow over shot the first tum to allow Moore by for second. Jack Rothstein smoked the Open Junior. Rick Zimmerman, took advantage of a mixup to slip by Lawler and into second while Rothstein motered home with a half straightaway lead. Sparkie Edmonston got a fantastic hole shot on the Open Experts to grab the lead in front of Earl Bachant and Jim McCracken. McCracken had a horrendous get off coming through the gate to pu t Carrol Jackson in to third. Coming out of the last tum, still on lap one, Jim'Keener moved up to third. At the checkered Edmonston had pulled out a comfortable lead over Bachan t and Keener to end a long dry spell for Sparkie. The side-hack race was split into two divisions; Ligh tweigh t (up to 50cc) and Heavweight (501cc and up) and both were outasite, but the smaller class provided more passing. The Ligh tweigh t class saw Joe I-leithe/Pat Miller charge righ t in to the lead, chased by Leon PrescottfLarry Rauh and Rick Bell/Paul Bellows. The· Prescott/Rauh rig had some difficulties in the last tum of lap one and both the Bel/Bellows and Don Davis/ fred Acevedo rigs got around for second and third. Entering the second righ t-hander of lap three Bell/Bellows took the lead, then Davis/Acevedo grabbed second. In the second tum of the last lap Bell/Bellows slipped our a bit high and Da\;s/Aceyedo were through and into the lead, then exiting the last tum, Heithe/Miller got a drive on Bell/Bellows and just slipped by for second at the flag.
